Pantyhose Physics 101 -or- Pantyhose For Dummies
Pantyhose Physics 101 -or- Pantyhose For Dummies
Along a ZZ Top vein, I have L'Eggs, but I don't know how to use them.
I've scanned through so many threads, a gazillion posts on pantyhose as leak preventers, but I'm stymied. What gets cut? Which pieces are used? How does it wrap around and fasten?
Wish there was a video tutorial on this, but if anyone can shed some light on how to fashion a chin strap out of pantyhose for this restless sleeper, I might be able to get my darned pillows to stay in place.
Thanks in advance,
welki

Chin strap - use the control top panty hose and cut horizontally and adjust the size.
For the mask fixes you could try cutting horizontally across a thigh creating a loop of about 2 inches wide - thighs are about the width of a head.
What actually works best is not panty hose but Lycra stretch tights or leggings.
Start hacking!!

And it is not pantyhose.
And they are typically not used as chinstraps.

That would work, yep. The way I make straps, however, is cutting off the legs and using the two long legs as two separate straps. One stays permanently attached in a loop up at forehead level, much like a sweatband; I tie the other one behind my head:BlackSpinner wrote:For the mask fixes you could try cutting horizontally across a thigh creating a loop of about 2 inches wide - thighs are about the width of a head.

I prefer tying the strap that cradles the nasal pillows instead of using a continuous loop. That way I can easily loosen or tighten the "cradling" strap during the night. I use a double-start knot -- stays flat, doesn't get loose on its own, but is very easy to deliberately loosen and/or remove:

Exactly. "Tights", not plain "pantyhose." Available in the hosiery section of just about any supermarket or pharmacy. The ones I get are L'eggs "Microfiber" tights.BlackSpinner wrote:What actually works best is not panty hose but Lycra stretch tights or leggings.

Thank you all for your replies, with particular recognition to roster for his beige rendition of Blue Man Group
I scoured the aisles, no polyester microfibre tights (at least I couldn't find them). BUT, I did find tights made of rayon and bamboo (marked down to $3.00, so into the cart they went). Heading to the States soon, will make sure I swing by a Walgreen's.
With the advice and link provided, Rested Gal's visual (you look so peaceful, even though I know you're not really sleeping - I can only aspire to look so angelic), and a pair of scissors, I am ready to fall into the arms of Morpheus.
Here's hoping!

Bamboo, shmamboo. When you cut these tights, all sorts of little tiny bits of fiber come loose, looks like black dandruff.
Will be on the look-out for those elusive Micro-Fibre L'Eggs.

Try a quick rinse. When you cut knit wear you cut the little loops and they come out. A quick rinse should get rid of them.welki wrote:Bamboo, shmamboo. When you cut these tights, all sorts of little tiny bits of fiber come loose, looks like black dandruff.

Rested Gal - did you remove all the rubber "nubby" piece under the adjustment part of the mask completely? Do you have something there to keep the hard plastic from being right on your head?
I don't know if I am asking my questions clearly enough. I bought a Headrest because of their popularity on this forum. I have been using the ComfortLite 2 and like it but it will be warm in the summer I think. It fits me well but I don't like the rubber headgear and that piece on my head.
I am thinking of maybe using the back strap from the ComfortLite 2 in place of the Headrest headgear but not sure how I would attach it and what to do with that rubber "nubby" piece that sits on the head.
If you can make any sense out of what I am asking---- thanks for any help!

Re: Pantyhose Physics 101 -or- Pantyhose For Dummies
I think I understand what you're asking. I removed ALL the headgear. All of it. All of the parts that had blue rubber "nubby" glued to them are gone. The "box" that sits on top of the front of head is gone. All the straps are gone. The only thing left is what you see right on the front of my face. There's just enough of the plastic to contain the exhaust vent and attach the nasal pillows to it.Hawthorne wrote:Rested Gal - did you remove all the rubber "nubby" piece under the adjustment part of the mask completely? If you look closely, you'll see a black rectangular object jutting out between my forehead and the plastic at eyebrow level. That black thing is a foam "pad" I insert there to keep the hard plastic of the exhaust vent from being against my forehead.
This might help you visualize what's gone and what remains. Here's my mask without headgear (or me!) attached:

The foam pad I use between my forehead and the hard plastic area of the vent is shown placed vertically in this old picture, just laying loose on the inside of that area. For the past year or so I've been placing the foam pad horizontally instead of vertically. Horizontal placement of the pad helps keep the sides of the upper strap from being against the front of my forehead.
I also found that the thickness of the pad I use can change the "tilt" of the front. A thick pad tilts the top outward, and correspondingly tilts the bottom (the nasal pillows themselves once the cradling strap is tied) inward. Like a seesaw. So, you can "adjust" how much you want the bottom of the nasal pillows to tilt inward toward the nostrils simply by using a thicker or thinner pad up at the eyebrow level.

Even better for seeing what's left...
Here's a picture Catnapper took of her Headrest with all the headgear removed:

Her post was written back when the Headrest mask was called the Twilight NP (and still was being referred to on the forum by it's original "oldest" name...the Aura.) Man, what a complicated history of names that mask has been through, but always was..."itself."
