S8 auto to an S9 auto

Hey guys
Need some advice, been on cpap for several years. Currently have an s8 autopap set to 12-18 apap, I'm thinking of upgrading to the S9 ONLY for the better algorithm, can anybody confirm that it's worth me buying this machine out of pocket...I can get one for $500.00 off craigslist with 30 hours on it. My main concern is that $500.00 is alot of money for me right now, I'm only concerned with gettting better therapy with the advanced algorithm on the s9 It's supposed to react to events better over a pressure of 10, so i'm thinking i'd get alot better sleep....

If that S8 is the only machine you now have......and it craps out......that $500 is going to seem pretty cheap at that point.

Regardless of your motives, it's always a good bet to have a backup machine......even if it's something that just blows air.

Yeah, I've read that the S9 has a better algorithm, but I'm not sure if that's the ONLY reason I'd consider getting one.
Another advantage is that the S9 uses a more "standard" data storage device (rather than the proprietary card of the S8s).

If it's a local seller, try to get a look at it up close and get a demo to make sure it actually works.

Well currently I have a backup s8 escape regular cpap...I upgraded to an APAP a while ago and the latest and greatest was the S8 auto ii which I have now...I would primarily be upgrading in the hopes the S9 algorithm would provide a better therapy just not sure if it's really worth it

I'm not sure what to tell you.......about how to spend your money.
There are lots of people who love their S8s.
I've never used anything other than the old Legacy model Respironics machines, so I can't be of any help in this.....just relating what I've read by other ResMed owners.

Glad to hear you at least have a backup machine.

I switched between the s8 autoset ii & the same in s9 before moving on to vpap. I didn't feel any difference between the two machines really--but psychologically felt better because the numbers I saw each morning were better. Whether there actually was any physical difference, I honestly could not tell. I liked the standard SD card and climate control, slimline hose..............

When you where on auto what pressure range was your machine set to? I am mostly concerned about the algorithm differences about 10cm, the s8 auto ii won't respond to events when your about 10cm as the s9 auto will respond to those events....since my s8 is above the 10cm, im thinking I may get better therapy with the s9

I was always above 10 on both machines. I believe I started at 14-15 on the S8, and was in the 18-19 range with the S9........thus, very happily moved on to wonderful, more comfortable treatment with the vpap.

Thanks scrapper, hard decision to make if I want to fork the money out for the S9, hopefully more people will chime in and provide some advice, thanks again for all the replies.

One drawback to the S9 is that the slimline hose comes out of the back of the apap.......depending upon your setup, it can be inconvenient. I liked the slimline hose because it is smaller and lighter--but as far as placement coming from the machine, the S8 is preferable. Also on the s9, I don't think that you cannot just use any hose....you need the slimline with special attachment. My s9 has found a new home, so I cannot check that detail, but I'm sure that you could by researching on the resmed or cpap.com websites. Just something to be aware of........

Regardless of which APAP machine a person uses (in a range of pressures), optimal therapy is obtained when the minimum pressure is set to where it eliminates almost all of the events. If the person is using EPR, that also needs to be taken into consideration when setting the minimum pressure.......especially if the person is susceptible to apneas at the point of the end of the exhale cycle as they start to inhale.

The numbers I specified in my post were not meant to be a range--but the approximate average pressure that I used. After I read Den's response, I hoped that you didn't take my numbers as the low and high ends of a range as is used in setting the apap. They are too close together to be an effective setting for apap.

You can use any standard hose on an S9 if want to.
