Re: septoplasty and turbinate surgery
I just had my septoplasty surgery on 12/22/11 and I have had no pain. I was very nervous going in, my surgery was at 9am and I left the hospital at 12 because I had nausea when I got up to leave otherwise I would have been out of there around 11am. The only medicine I've taken are the antibiotics and im doing well on those. I have yet to get my splints taken out but getting the packing taken out was pretty gross and uncomfortable. I did have trouble sleeping due to the sore throat but that only lasted a night. It was hard for me to eat because my nose was plugged up and swallowing made my ears feel like they were going to pop. The only thing that's bothering me now is the numb palat, Im curious to see how long that will last.

Re: septoplasty and turbinate surgery
did anyone have UPPP or adenoid surgery? I'm scheduled to have tonsil/septum/UPPP/turbinate surgery in a couple of weeks
I want to have UPPP done but I heard that some people have swallowing problems afterwards and no improvement in their sleep apnea. also my surgeon hasn't done many UPPP's and doesn't seem to know much about sleep apnea
thanks for the info!!

Run the hell away from this Stuhlgang idiot before he butchers you. These surgeries are irreversible - he may ruin you for life.sickwithapnea17 wrote:did anyone have UPPP or adenoid surgery? I'm scheduled to have tonsil/septum/UPPP/turbinate surgery in a couple of weeks

Someone who "doesn't seem to know much about sleep apnea" does not need to be doing these surgeries!
Find an ENT who specializes in sleep apnea patients. Even if you have to travel to another city.
A consultation with Dr. Steven Park, NYC, would be well work the travel expense.
These verdammt knife-happy surgeons so piss me off.
Re: septoplasty and turbinate surgery
Just had one for the second time. Overnight stay. went Monday and out on Tuesday. back to work on Wednesday. Almost no bleeding . Few drops actually. Using Saline Rinses to get the gunk out. Bit painful now - if you let it dry. Else coming along nicely.
Re: septoplasty and turbinate surgery
I had my surgery a month ago. Nothing I experienced would I call painful. Uncomfortable - yes. Everyone is different so consider what you read and realize the odds are it won't be bad, but not exactly as it was for someone else. I had jello cups in all flavaors and ate that the first day. I suggest having a large number of kleenex boxes on hand. I can't imagine using a q-tip with the cotton sticking to everything. LOL I had a sore throat, headache and nose ache and most I took was my tylenol3. I think everyone has a different pain threshold, and you will know yours. I was lucky and had no nauseau. But I didn't drink any water at all prior to surgery either. I had no one to stay over night with me as they suggested and I was fine. I sat up sleeping and was back and forth from sleep to awake. I kept the TV on for company. The day after surgery they removed the sponges, tubes and splints. Not painful, but very uncomfortable. Lots of drainage of blood. Was able to gently blow my nose and was suggested that I hold one side shut and blow the other. (I think that was my first day and second day I remember them saying blow hard. LOL) Second day not really painful. I ate my jello and some egg/sausage frittata that was soft. Day of surgery, liquids basically. I didn't have to worry about going back to work, but if it was an emergency I most probably could have gone back on the fourth day, but if you have options, I'd take the week off. I was back on my BiPap 10 days ater, but had I been using the total face mask I have now, it would have been sooner. Just my opinion and my experience. Hope it helps.

How many days should I take off work. How long before I can use Breeze again?
Thanks, Don

Re: septoplasty and turbinate surgery and bone spur removal
I had my septoplasty, turbinate reduction and bone spur removal this monday ( so 4 days post op) and upon reading this forum I find my experience differs from most. Perhaps that is because I am 17 or I had my surgery done in France ( although my surgeon is american)
I arrived at the hospital at 8:15 was in surgery by 9 and out at 11:15
I had an IV in me but no clue what they gave me, I do remember waking up with the most intense pain of my life, My nose hurt but the worst part was my jaw, my throat and my teeth! I had specifically spoken to the anesthesiologist about the fact that I had had jaw problems in the past and to please not force my jaw open wide. Post op my surgeon was not very helpful- gave me no instructions- When i described the extreme pain in my mouth and teeth he said my throat would hurt from intubation and as for my teeth, well he had to break my nose and crack several parts of my nose in order to be able to straighten the septum
background info: I have NEVER been able to breathe out of my nose- until last year i didnt even see this as unusual- so unlike most i did not experience dry mouth or bother from having to breathe out of my mouth for several days post op- but i will need therapy to learn how to breathe out of my nose that that i can!
anyway- i spent the night in the hospital with stuffing/padding in my nose and a "cotton mustache" on top of that
My surgeon told me I could ask the nurses for morphine for my pain- but they said I had had more than enough pain killers-
I asked them what they gave me- it was an anti-inflammatory drug and paracetamol! no codeine no morphine but paracetamol two hours post op!
they continued to give me that through an IV until about 3 am at which point they took at my IV tube and gave me 300mg paracetamol every 4 hours or so as well as a load of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory meds..
10 am the day after surgery they removed my padding, and dipped new padding in what looked like rubbing alcohol and shoved and twisted it back up my nose. BOY DID THAT HURT!
they removed the second padding 2 hours later, my surgeon came in said I had stitches and to get them taken out in 10 days.
I was given no instruction on how to clean my nose ( just given an oil, and tubes of saline to pour down my nose twice a day) but as for all the crusties building up I cant leave them- cant pick them, and I blew my nose before reading these forums!
the tuesday and wednesday post op my throat still hurt immensely from the intubation and I was sent home with 5 rx's none of which being any form of pain relief- needless to say I am 17 and have a low threshold so i continued the paracetamol regime I was on in the hospital. Day three and four were slightly better, but today I have been coughing up a lot of bloody phlegm! like a very large amount!
SO can anyone who's surgeon perhaps was a bit more helpful tell me why it might be that I have so much blood coming up my throat? and what pain may I have caused from lightly blowing my nose?
thanks so much!
Also- since the surgery i've had a very weird fluttering in my chest- feels like an extra heartbeat- asked my surgeon about it he replied" yeah sometimes that can happen" and left the room! anything guys?

Re: septoplasty and turbinate surgery
After reading what everyone else has said about Septoplasty surgery I am at Awh.. I just had it June 13th..it is now june 22 it was the most aweful thing i have experienced, leaves me to wonder why mine went so bad.. I can't take pain pills for one, The first night of my surgery I almost died:( My nose and head swelled uncontrollaby..I still can't breathe and i haven't slept since the day before surgery. I have had 2 other major surgeries and neither compared to the pain i have went through. Also i want to add every time i took a drink I would almost drown in it.. My nose was collasped 85% reason for my surgery.. If I had known it was this bad I would not have followed through with it. It was also done out patient surgery I still can't smile and my lips are blue and swollen. I would like to know if anyone else had such a bad experience like me.. I don't understand.. and what i have went through I would advise anyone not to do it..
Re: septoplasty and turbinate surgery
Hi all. Just wanted to add a post to this topic. I had surgery Mon and its now Fri. Its very hard for me breathing thru my mouth during sleep so its been a little rough the 1st couple days but the body will get tired enough to put you out anyway. I think theres this fear of not getting enough air without the nose but I know when I relax my breathing it becomes so much easier. Ive tried several different methods and found that just after taking my tylenol #3 w codiene, when the pain subsides is the best time to try to sleep. I seem less stuffed up and restless then. Saline rinces several times a day plus now I used a tip off here of breathing in steam to break up the mucous for better draining just before lying down. It worked extremely well.
I "ll have to say I had this done 4 times now. Twice with broken nose twenty yrs ago which back then no splints. Which means nose packed solid and no breathing at all for a week. Talk about fear and the feeling like your gonna die. Didnt though obviously. Lol. But in comparison its much easier this way. Thought I'd just share that. Thanks for all you help.

Re: septoplasty and turbinate surgery
I had this surgery done a few months ago and went through without any complcations. Barely any pain (most of it was bone rather than turbinate taken out). Septoplasty not touched. I didn't really need to use tylenol, and stopped after the first day. Some bleeding first day and then much less as the days went by. Went back to work in 3days. Doctor used a microdebrider, and did a submocosal resection. Can breathe much better now, after about 3 weeks. About nearly 25% of congestion space (turbinate + bone) removed. First day breathing was much better, then got worse for a week (as doctor warned), and then improved the week after than especially after a post-op appointment where the doctor sucked out some scabbing. Good luck to all!
Re: septoplasty and turbinate surgery
I am not sure if I am on the right board or not. I am a CPAP user who just had the septoplasty/turbinate reduction and also opening of the maxillary sinuses. I had the surgery done 20 days ago and am misserable. I am so congested and with having to use a cpap at night , I can't get any sleep. I use the salt rinses 3-4 times a day and (a lot during the night) I just started to blow my nose very softly. I get a lot of mucus, dark brown stuff that comes out. My right side is almost always closed like it was before surgery.
I honestly do not see any improvement at all in air flow. In fact , now that I can't use my nose sprays at night to help open the sinus, I am sleeping even worse now. I use the cpap only to wake up 1-2 hours later gasping for air and having to go and do the salt rinses at 2 am and 4 am and 6 am.
Please tell me this gets easier. I am so ready to grab my nasal spray again just so I can get some sleep!

This is the right board. I am so sorry to hear that this surgery didn't improve things for you.
What does your surgeon say about your progress?

Re: septoplasty and turbinate surgery
You need to talk to your surgeon. I had much better experience with recovery - quick and painless years ago. It seems it took about a week for my nostrils to open and air to flow freely. Definitely not longer than a week.BOBBIontheshore wrote:I am not sure if I am on the right board or not. It would not surprise me if someone said their recovery was two week. But 20 days is getting out there. Talk to your surgeon - go visit if he wants you to.
