rescan 3.13 tweak for respiatory rate and tidal

can someone give me clear instructions how to enable respiratory and tidal data on rescan 3.13

Although these steps are specific to the S9 Autoset, they should work for other Resmed machines by substituting the correct line for your specific machine.

First off, as idamtnboy suggested in another thread, I recommend downloading Firstobject's XML Editor from http://www.firstobject.com/dn_editor.htm. NotePad or XML NotePad can be used, but FO XML Editor is fast, free, doesn’t require an install, and I found it much easier to use.

Here are the steps I took for my S9 Autoset in order to see respiratory rate and tidal volume with ResScan 3.13-3.14 (the steps for prior versions are different):

• Make a backup copy of C:\Program Files\Resmed\ResScan3\ResScan.xml (Windows XP)first, so that you can get back if any errors are made
• Make another backup copy of C:\Program Files\Resmed\ResScan3\ResScan.xml if you're prone to making mistakes like me
• Open C:\Program Files\Resmed\ResScan3\ResScan.xml using your chosen editor
• Locate /RESSCAN/DATAANALYSIS/VIEWS/DETAILED/GRAPHS/RESPIRATORYRATE/GRAPH/PNA_EXCLUDE/<EXCLUDEDNODE NODEID=”#RRT”>
• Either delete the next line containing <EXCLUDEPNA PNA=”S9_AUTOSET”/> or comment it out so that it reads <!--<EXCLUDEPNA PNA=”S9_AUTOSET”/>-->
• Locate /RESSCAN/DATAANALYSIS/VIEWS/DETAILED/GRAPHS/TIDALVOLUME/GRAPH/PNA_EXCLUDE/<EXCLUDEDNODE NODEID=”#TID”>
• Either delete the next line containing <EXCLUDEPNA PNA=”S9_AUTOSET”/> or comment it out so that it reads <!--<EXCLUDEPNA PNA=”S9_AUTOSET”/>-->
• Save the file
• Open ResScan 3.13 and go to your patient file
• Under Review, go to Detailed Graphs
• To the right of Serial No., click the "Show/Hide Graph Information Panel" button
• Under the Navigation and/or Detailed tabs (whichever you desire), check the boxes for Respiratory Rate and Tidal Volume (may need to be logged in as a Windows admin user for these changes to be persistent)
• At this point, you should be able to see both respiratory rate and tidal volume, but tidal volume may look empty
• Since ResScan fixed the tidal volume scale bug in 3.13, go to the menu for Tools->Options
• On the Preferences tab, click the Detailed Graph Range button
• Select Tidal Volume in the Graph dropdown list and set the upper range to something like 1000, 1500, or 2000 (I used 1600 because I tend to take a deep breath to kick Autostart in)
• Click okay to close the options window

In regards to the "Locate" steps, each section between forward slashes refers to a block of code. In Notepad they appear as separate lines inside angled brackets (such as <RESPIRATORYRATE>). In XML NotePad or OF XML Editor, they are levels in a tree structure, similar to folders inside Explorer.

You should now be able to see tidal volume data. Unfortunately, because the scale was wrong in earlier versions, the tidal volume for sessions that were downloaded prior to 3.13 will appear to be a flat line due to the bug fix. I have, however, verified that re-downloading prior data will correct it.

Thanks again to idamtnboy for a few key tips in a previous thread. Not only did they make things easier, they prodded me into finding the minimal amount of changes necessary for this tweak.

Wow, that worked! I have no idea what tidal volume is, but it's impressive that I got it to work! For some reason, I didn't have to go into the Detailed view to get tidal volume and respiratory rate to show up.

Of course, maybe this is too much information...

IMO, respiratory and tidal volume data like most of the other data in CPAPs like S9, is not important even to sleep doctors. May by to pulmonologists and students in medical schools. Where are rested-gal and a- mile- hi- gal to verify it?

Hmmm, if "normal" tidal volume is around 500 ml, or 7 ml/kg body mass, I'm a bit "low." I weigh about 175 lbs which comes to about 80 kg. I should be averaging about 560 ml, but my data shows I'm averaging about 400 ml. That'sabout 30% below where I should be.

Now, maybe when sleeping the number should be a bit lower, but 30%? Doesn't seem right.

Another mystery solved. Worked great. It's interesting that during periods of REM sleep tidal volume increases, but respiratory rate doesn't increase so much. Thanks for taking the time to let us know how to make the tweak.

I've noticed TL changes as well that probably correspond to REM, but my respiratory rate consistently tends to slow down the longer I sleep.

The free XML Editor (link above) makes it sooooo much easier to edit the file!

The instructions work for 3.14, too.

A lot of detailed data is "not important" to a sleep doctor with only 15 min consultation time, but may be quite revealing to a person doing home CPAP studies.
For example I am often interested in seeing at Sleep Onset to see how long it takes for my respiratory rate to double. It is an indication of a transition, which is difficult for some people. And the inverse sequence at Awakening. In my case the AHI count goes way up during this time, but is not meaningful IMO.

I know this is an old post but I just came across it. IMO this indicates a rather limited point of view. Should someone ever need to tweek the settings on an Respironics ASV machine and not want to use the "Auto" RR setting, then knowing your "default" RR is very important.

Also, on any type of machine if someone is being over ventilated by a particular pressure setting (and getting symptoms such as soreness in the chest, etc after a night of therapy) the Tidal Volume can give an indication of the over-ventilation.

I know as both have applied in my sleep therapy adventures where having this information has been critical. For example, I was able to use my data via ResScan/SleepHead on the S9 to give me an indication of back up RR changes needed in the ASV.

Other times I have seen "episodes" with the S9 where the RR shot up to about 30 (from an average around 12-13) where no therapy flag was indicated. I've got to feel that if you suddenly shoot up to over 2 times normal respiration rate that something is disturbing sleep during that time.

And I was once being over-ventilated on a machine and besides the very unpleasant symptoms I was able to get objective data per the abnormally increased Tidal Volume that was reported.

More information (up to a point) is generally better in my experience and I am grateful for those who have done the work to make this information available.

I happened upon this thread because I am looking for ways to unlock Respiratory Rate and Tidal volume for ResScan 4.1. Has anyone been able to do this or know of any specific instructions for doing this in 4.1?
