hangover effect?

Post by Doubtful Tom » Thu Nov 18, 2010 4:38 pm

On the plus side, I think I had longest session of uninterrupted sleep last night -- approx 5 1/2 hours -- but on the down side, I woke up with a serious hangover (and I don't drink or take any other meds). No headache exactly, but quite thick-headed, almost groggy, and more tired than usual, even worse than before the sleep study. Stayed this way all day. It almost felt like I'd been awake all night; red-rimmed eyes suggest the same.

So I'm wondering if this means I really did sleep but am not used to that extended stretch of air pressure, or if the apap did just enough to keep me asleep but not enough to prevent the apneas?

Any thoughts appreciated.
Tom

It is a fairly normal occurrence for newbies.... your body is still acclimating to the added O2 it has been missing for however long you've had OSA and didn't know it. Think about it....you used to sleep in a state of suffocation with blood pressure rising and adrenalin pumping....all unbeknownst to you! Now, your body is getting all the O2 it needs, your bp is normalizing, and the adrenalin rush is relaxed to normal. These are huge changes for your body to adjust to. I had a dull headache for the first couple of weeks and was still very tired. You have a lot of sleep debt to work off! I am almost 3 months into therapy, and today was the first day I have awakened actually feeling clear headed and a bit energetic. I was so ecstatic over this as I didn't think it was ever going to happen.... each of us is different, and I've been extremely fortunate in other regards....easy sleep study/titration, and no issues with masks at all. Others have all kinds of problems..... so consider yourself lucky if all you have a is 'hangover'..... it will go away, I promise!!

Do you have software to monitor your therapy? If so, you can see how well you are doing....and know that each night is a step closer to reversing damage and starting down a healthier path.
Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.

I much appreciate the reassuring comments, Emilia.
I confess to a moment of weakness this morning when I thought, "well, shoot, if I'm gonna feel this hungover, I might as well go back to drinking bourbon and popping benzo's." But a few moments of meditation beneath the luminous red maple tree in my yard evaporated that silly thought.
Though the transition to a life of hosedom has been less than smooth, I'm determined to stick with the regimen.
May your own awakenings continue to greet you with a chorus of ecstatic song.

Hi Bob,

Could you PM me with some light reading too? I'm very interested to learn more about this as I have somewhat similar effects recently. Thanks!
