Respironics BiPAP Auto SV too hot leave your hand on it.

Post by dllfo » Wed Nov 03, 2010 9:02 am

Morning, my SV woke my wife up, who woke me up telling me the SV was making strange sounds. It was. It was also too hot to leave my hand on it. I unplugged it around 4am and left it to cool off. I called Apria around 5am asking for a replacement. Got an answering service who took the msg.

Has anyone else had a machine get so hot they could not leave their hand on it? I put my hand down on the top, between the area where the control buttons are and the end where you plug it in. There was half a tank in the HH and the water was not hot.

Ideas?
Suggestions (other than replace it)?

Thanks, Dave

I fear no other good ideas here. It sure sounds as if something is wrong with the motor / impeller. I've had that happen with another unit (a BiPAP). Sounds as if it's time for replacement.

Dave, Dave, I splain it to you, and you never listen! How many BiPAP Auto SVs are you going to burn through? If my count is correct, you are working on destroying your 4th ASV? Your Max IPAP 30 is too high. Turn Max IPAP down to 25. The machine will will not overheat, your wife will not wake up, and you will not die because you you were 5cm short on an IPAP spike. The problem with the BiPAP Auto SV set at MAX IPAP 30 is that even though you are not using IPAP 30 in the moment, the machine is working harder ALL THE TIME at Max IPAP 30, then at Max IPAP 25. Give your machine, yousrelf, and your wife a rest, turn Max IPAP down to 25cm. Anyway, good to hear from you!

If aBiPAP ASV machine that has been running fairly cool (they all run warm) is now running warm, first make sure the air filter is clean. If it is, the most likely issue is an internal air leak, or a problem with the regulating shutter. Another possible problem is a failing motor bearing, but something tells me that the entire machine would not get hot over this. Possibility number three is an electronic failure. The main circuit board i right under the top cover.

If your machine works like the BiPAP SV advanced machine, the motor only speeds up when higher pressure is called for. Unlike what Banned suggests, the motor does not run to supply 30 cm at all times. My machine is set to 30 cm max pressure. While I have heard it really wind up every now and then, most of the time it runs at a low RPM. It will speed up moderately if it decides some ASV action is called for, but not a lot of action.

timbalionguy, I agree with your summary. Not sure where the other info came from because I have talked to Respironics about the setting of 30 cmH2O and they said it was designed for it. My machine usually surges up to the upper 20s, then comes back down. Only been a few times when it hit 30cmH2O and held it for a long period of time. Longest was about 40 minutes, EP software said I was not generating but about 5-10% of my breaths.

BTW, I asked this question around 2007, "How do you handle 30 cmH2O" and no one else was that high. Are YOU hitting 30 and if so, do you know why?

They talked about trying me in Heliox again, seeing if it would lower my overall numbers. Haven't done it yet. One Pulmonologist told me 20 cmH2O in your throat was like a hurricane. He asked if 30 did not hurt. I slept through it.

Air filter is clean, both of them. I do have some restrictions on the exit end. Bacterial filter (changed at least monthly) and a device that keeps oxygen from going down into the machine. When I wake up in the morning the machine is running quietly most of the time.

I don't hit 30 that often but when I need it, it is nice to know it is there. These machines have all been replaced under warranty with Respironics, through Apria, so if Respironics does not want 30 cmH2O off of it.

Thanks again, Dave
