New Study, New Pressure, New Problem

Post by SMenasco » Fri Oct 22, 2010 7:40 am

After 15 years of Cpap with a pressure of 10, I started having dry mouth a couple of months ago. Doctor asked me to go back through the sleep study. Bad news, apnea is much worse. New study indicates a new pressure of 16. The new pressure has made the problem worse, as I now cannot sleep on my back without mouth coming open and recirculating air, although I have no problem at all while sleeping on my side. I bought a Resmed chin strap and I had to tighten it really tight for it to even begin to work, so tight my chin is now sore. Anyone have a suggestion to keep my mouth shut? Thanks.

1) Get a full face mask and the therapy will work even when your mouth opens.

2) Why not sleep on your sides? Your pressure requirements may be much lower when sleeping on your sides. See viewtopic/t43360/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=43 ... 79#p384179

Was dry mouth your only symptom that your therapy was no longer as effective as it had been in the past?

Is your CPAP fully data capable? What brand and model CPAP are you using?

I use a chinstrap AND tape my mouth closed. The only combo that works for me.

Same for me...that combo (tape over my mouth AND chin strap to keep my cheeks from ballooning out with the trapped air) is the only thing that allows me to use the mask I sleep most comfortably in. No full face mask I've tried (many of them) is as comfortable for me as my Headrest nasal pillows mask.

SMenasco, if you decide to try some FF (full face) masks, perhaps you'd find one that you like. But if you can't find a FF mask that lets you sleep as comfortably as the mask you're already used to, check out these links for the many ways others have been dealing with mouth air leaks and/or mouth breathing during sleep:

I have a Resmed S8 and to my knowledge, it produces no data. I have had a number of masks, all of which leaked, sputtered and woke me up. I have been using the Swift II since it came on the market. I like it better than all the rest I have tried. I think I will try the tape. I do sleep on my side a good bit of the time, but when I turn on my back (asleep when I turn) the trouble starts. Thanks for your replies.

I don't know the type S8 II have. It's the compact lightweight el cheapo, with a humidifier on the end.

Look at the top of your S8 II in the navy blue above the handle on top. The model name will be there. Compact, Escape, Elite, AutoSet .....

Try some of the tricks to keep yourself off the back: tennis balls on back of shirt, small backpack, Zzoma, etc.

My machine is a Compact. Don't even want to talk about tennis balls. I taped my mouth shut last night and had no problems, no leaks (Swift II), no cotton mouth and slept soundly, or I think I did. Thanks for the tip. With the surgical tape, I don't even need the chin strap. Thanks.
