How long does it take to get good sleep?
Hello everyone. I now have the nasal pillows and am not having any leaking or soreness issues. I am able to sleep comfortably on my sides and that makes me very happy. It has not been 2 nights with the pillows rather than the FF mask. I am getting a block of 4 hours of sleep before I awaken and I am able to fall back asleep quickly after rolling over to my opposite side. I have even had a couple of dreams which indicates to me that there is some REM where before there was none. So why am I more tired today than I was 3 weeks ago before I even got the CPAP machine? How long does it take to start feeling more rested on average? I know everyone is different and some folks are lucky enough to start feeling refreshed after the 1st night but for those who don't, is there an average time period of adjustment for those who are comfortable with all their gear and do close eyes at night and reopen them in the morning without waking in between? I know I'll persist in using the CPAP machine and nasal pillows because they are causing me no discomfort BUT I wish they'd cause me to feel rested throughout my day. I return to the doctor with the memory card 6 weeks from now. Maybe the setting is too low? I'm all ears here and I appreciate the input and support from you wonderful folks.

Hi and welcome
Check your PMs I sent you a useful one
read, learn, post results, ask questions.
How long it takes varies quite a bit. But once you empower yourself with the right knowledge and tools you can get things moving in the right direction pretty swiftly starting now, and not in 6 weeks time
Hows your leak rate?

I'll have to download the software and learn how to read it. I'll repost when I get this done. Thanks for the input.

Well, I am 6 weeks into this and I am sleeping like a baby..... energy levels? not so much. I definitely have more stamina since before cpap, but that energy kick I was hoping for still has not arrived. I am hopeful, though, that is will arrive sooner than later! Some very lucky folks get it right away; others seem to take weeks or months to pay back their sleep debt and emerge with newfound energy. Keep on plugging along.....you'll get there!
Best of luck!!
Best of luck!!
Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.

The answer to your question, and the answer to "what is the best mask" are about the same...it's different for everyone.Wanttosleep wrote: How long does it take to start feeling more rested on average? I've been at this for two months now, and finally feeling like I"m getting somewhere. I did have good nights here and there in the last 2 months, but now it's getting more consistent. Last night I fell asleep about 11, slept very soundly, and woke up to the alarm this morning. I would love to be able to take a nap right about now, and by the time dinner is over this evening, I'll be wiped out. It seems it just takes awhile for everything to come together. I got a new mask last week, and I think that's when I finally turned a corner and things are settling in. Baby steps (I hate 'em), but they do pay off in the long run. When am I going to feel more energized? Not sure, but I hope someday.

Re: How long does it take to get good sleep?
It has been 6 months for me (minus 2 days).
Some good effects happened immediately, others took longer.
My disturbing, breathless nightmares ended; as did my multiple wake-ups with a rapid pulse and horrible headache.
More energy has been sneaking up on me, gradually.
First, I noticed that I could stay awake more easily in the daytime, while working, watching TV, and DRIVING!!!
Now I feel like walking the dog whenever he 'asks'.
I don't eat to stay awake in the afternoon. I lost 10 pounds without trying--(now for the other 50)
Baby steps; and in this forum all the hand-holding you could ask for--(thanks)

I'm three weeks into therapy (and two days with APAP rather than CPAP).
Sleeping through the night without remembering waking up? Yep, that's happening on a regular basis if you call sleeping from 2:00 AM to 7:30 AM sleeping through the whole night.
More tired and sleepy during the day than I was when I started CPAP? YES. The first 2 1/2 weeks I felt like something the cat drug in. The last two days have been better, although I can't say they've been as "good" or as "normal" as I felt before starting CPAP/APAP.
Waking up feeling rested? Hasn't happened yet. I'm still patient and I know it will come eventually.

Re: How long does it take to get good sleep?
It took me almost 2 months to sleep through the night with CPAP. WHen I did, I woke with this most delicious and peaceful feeling. With apnea, I would wake in full "fight or flight" mode--heart pounding, adrenaline rushing, negative thoughts going 100 MPH in my head. My first real effect from CPAP was that went away. I woke slowly and peacefully, feeling like I was floating on a cloud.
More energy--only slightly. Less sleepy, but more tired. I think I switched from hating to go to sleep to craving it because it felt so darn good--like a drug that should be illegal. I'm not drowsy or sleepy, but I do feel physically tired--probably because I can also do a bit more during the day.
After winning all the battles to be able to sleep with CPAP (finding the right mask was chief among them), I started to get longer and longer stretches of sleep until I could finally sleep all night. So 4 hours is good, data helps in case something is disturbing your rest (most often it's a sudden pressure jump in REM sleep), and you should see that 4 hours gradually stretch out until you can sleep all night.
Persistence is key. Hang in there!
