heated hose question

Post by jpu1969 » Sun Oct 23, 2005 11:12 pm

Just wondering when I should receive my heated hose from sleep
zone.I ordered it on the 20th of this month and I live in oklahoma.
Can't wait to get it, I have been on cpap for 5 years now and have always been fighting the rainout.American Home Patient needs to read this board, I have learned more from this board in the last few weeks than they have told me in the past 5 years.

I ordered mine on Friday 10-14, received the confirmation e-mail on Monday 10-17 and am hoping it's waiting for me a home today 10-24. Still waiting 9 days after ordering....it's like they are on the other side of the world!

I received the hose yesterday. Worked good last night. No rainout at increased humidity level. Hose is definately heavier than the standard hose. It will take a few nights to get used to.

I ordered mine on October 17 and it showed up yesterday. Went to Radio Shack today and I am looking forward to the hose's maiden run in a few hours (as soon as as the White Sox go up 3 - 0).

G'day jpu1969 from Australia.

We ship within 24hours and confirm every order by email.
Your order will leave Australia "the land of OZ" by Qantas "The flying Kangaroo", again within 24hours.

Any delays will be at the USA end which can take up to 21days due to custome etc, but 7 to 10 days is the norm.

We have never had an order go astray. US Postal Service never fails!

Wishing you all well and many a better nights sleep .

jpu, yes, I've read of that happening to some people. The cold plastic of the mask, and the cold plastic of the connector hose (if a mask has a short hose that's part of the mask) can have condensation form in those places too.

While the Aussie heated hose will prevent condensation in the main air hose, a few people will still have some rainout problem in the unheated portions of cold plastic (short connector hose and mask) that the warm humidified air still has to make it through before it finally reaches you. Covering those unheated areas with fleece or some kind of insulated material might be necessary.

Generally (not always, but generally) the Aussie heated hose is enough to prevent that from happening inside the mask. It keeps the humidified air warm enough during the long portion of the trip through the main air hose that the air can usually retain its moisture even though it does finally have to run the gauntlet through a cold plastic mask and possibly also through a cold plastic connector tube.

Right now, it might just be warm, humid breath condensing inside the cold plastic mask that is adding to your present unheated hose situation.

Will be interesting to know if the heated hose resolves the whole problem for you. If it doesn't, you might need to make a cover for your mask and/or any short connector hose.

I'm one of those. I think it is caused by a number of things:
1. (First and most obvious) relatively low tempratures in the home.
2. Your pressure: I think it works like a fan - the more it blows, the faster the flow, the drier the air... I think. Our physicists will correct me if I'm wrong. My pressure is very low compare to most (7.5 top, and it rarely stays there).

So now that it's cold, I wrap both hoses - the main one, and the one connecting to my masks, and keep the HH relatively low - and it's much better with a heated hose than without it.

O.

Is the heated hose better than the hose covers for rainout? I have to make a decision on this due to my rainout issue.....
Thanks

Is the heated hose better than the hose covers for rainout?
Absolutely. For some, hose covers do the trick. But if hose covers can't get the job done, the heated hose sure can.

I personally would not spend money for a hose cover. I'd save that money to put on buying the heated hose (which comes with its own cover) right from the get-go....for the surest shot of all at controlling rainout. If I wanted to see if a hose cover might be enough, I'd make one from material laying around the house. I don't sew, but I'd figure out a way to make it - velcro bands around the cloth in strategic places, or safety pins, or something!

If I didn't have a rainout problem and didn't need the heated hose, I'd make or buy a hose cover - just to keep from listening to a bare hose scrape against things and to make it all less medical looking.

Rainout is bad and that's the truth! Believe me! I just got my new CPAPer the other day and I turned that humidifer up as high as it would go. It could have boiled some potatoes in that plastic box, and I nearly drownded in my sleep. I ordered me a heated hose and a catheter so now I won't ever have to get up in the night and I can just sleep. I hope that hose works. My grandma said that if I keep suckin' up a box of water every night I'll get the pneumonia.
