Removing Smell from Humidifier Chamber?

Post by unityco » Mon May 31, 2010 12:53 pm

My machine has recently started to smell bad, and I think I've tracked it down to the humidifier chamber. It smells like burnt rubber - I guess from having run dry. I'm surprised the machine didn't have protection against running dry, and I'm not sure of the most effective way to remove the smell. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

I know exactly what you're talking about. I usually check the water level before I hang it up each night, but one time I forgot. I woke up the next morning to what I described as a barnyard smell. I guess that comes from having grown up in rural midwest. But I digress....
I found that just washing the chamber out with a mild dish detergent worked fine. I used palmolive on mine. I haven't had any problem with it since, not to mention remembering to check the water level before I go to bed.

Welcome
Soak your humidfier in a solution of 3 parts water to 1 part vinegar for a couple hours, should do the trick.
Cheers

You may also have to rinse the inside of your hose with the vinegar solution.

Yep, hubby had the same problem last night. He discovered it right at bedtime. I rinsed out the humidifier and it still made an odor so I swapped out the hose with a new one that was we got about a week ago. Problem solved. The old hose is now happily keeping all the wires behind my tv untangled.

Clever use of an old hose!

If the vinegar doesn't help rinse with a nice scented mouth wash or use a scented face soap when you wash it. Some shampoos are nice too.

Thank you, but I can't take credit for it. I read it in a thread here about finding uses for old hoses. I just cut the ends off and the cut a slit up the hose with scissors. Our surround sound always makes a horrible tangled up mess and it is all now neatly tucked in a cpap hose.

Lemon juice, the bottled kind works. Squirt some in in, swish it around, let it sita few mins. Rinse really well.

Thanks again, everyone! So far, it seems soap and water was (surprisingly) enough. I'll keep the other ideas on hand should I let this happen again though.
