Need help making a Mask Choice

Post by jfpetesn » Fri Apr 30, 2010 3:10 pm

Relatively new user (3mo) currently using a Comfort Fusion Respironics nasal mask and it has been working pretty good. This was my first and only mask so I am lucky to find something that works fairly well. The only problem I am having is I am a side sleeper and in the AM I find that the right side of my face is getting sore from laying in my side. I have minimal leaks and my numbers are pretty good using it most nights. AI is 1 but HI is really varied but generally below 5. I have an S8 autoset. I have decided to buy a new mask and have settled on two but need suggestions to make the final decision.

I want to try the Swift FX as I think it offer the potential for big benefits but I have never used a nasal pillow. The safe choice would be the Mirage softgel nasal mask. I am paying for this myself so I hate to waste the money on a mistake. Any suggestions you have would be great. It seems that ResMed has a price fix deal going on so no one will discount..that sucks.

Thanks

Mask choice is REALLY personal, so you're liable to get all kinds of suggestions. Here's my 2 cents: I LOVE the Hybrid mask. It works well when I sleep on my side, leaves enough space that I can put the mask on and still use my spectacles to read, and it fits over my mouth just in case I mouth breathe ( not usually a problem for me, but happens occasionally.) I haven't found a downside to this mask yet. I also have a Sleepweaver, which is really comfy. I seem to have more leaks with it, so I don't use it often. Good luck with your search for the perfect mask!

I used the ComfortFusion for a while. Not bad for leaks unless you moved to the side and it digs in. It was comfortable in sitting and supine position. I also hated the air discharge down on my chest and shoulders.

I have used the FX... comfortable, a little noisy and I could not get it to stop leaking. It also had a great flexible short hose attachment.

The LT was quieter, heavier and just as comfortable and better for side sleepers. Still couldn't get the leaks good enough and my nares hurt all the time. The hose was not flexible at all.
I also found it more difficult to adjust humidity. End of good looking lightweight nasal pillows.

Back to Nasal masks and I had tried on the SoftGel which I am using tonite for the first night....
First impressions are very good fit and comfortable for me.

You really have to try everything for yourself cause everybody is different. What works for one will not for another.
All that you can get here is a list of masks to try for yourself....

cpapauction.com has good prices. You will need to fax or email your prescription before bidding. As with any auction site, read the description carefully, check the seller's feedback and shipping policy, before bidding. Ebay can't sell whole masks, but they can and do sell parts. Ask if the seller will combine shipping costs.

Most people like the Swift FX, but I didn't, because of the hose coming down instead of overhead, and the cold draft from the vent. But, everyone's different, and it might not bother you at all. . It's a very light and comfortable mask.

If you go with the Mirage Softgel, you could also use the Activa Lt cushion with the same frame. Check the ResMed site for mask fitting templates, it comes in S, M, L, and Large Wide.

I use the swift LT myself and love it. I sleep on my side alot and have found even tossing from side to side and on my back once I get a good seal the pillows do not leak.
