HSUS now ranked lower than PETA
by Other News

WASHINGTON — The nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom poiinted to a newly downgraded rating from Charity Navigator as evidence that the Humane Society of the United States is not adequately fulfilling its stated charitable purpose.

Charity Navigator slashed the rankings for Humane Society of the United States and the Humane Society International, the international arm of Humane Society of the United States. Charity Navigator now gives Humane Society of the United States a lower level of trustworthiness than the notoriously radical People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

The American Institute of Philanthropy also rates Humane Society of the United States very critically, giving the organization a "C-minus" grade overall.

Taxes
Humane Society of the United States' 2008 tax filing shows that the group spent less than 1 percent of its collected donations on grants to hands-on pet shelters.
It put five times as much into its executive pension plan during that year.

David Martosko, Center for Consumer Freedom director of research and the editor of http://www.humanewatch.org, released the following statement on Humane Society of the United States' new ranking, "Charity Navigator's downgrading of the Humane Society of the United States and its international arm sends a clear message: Animal charities can't stuff donor dollars away in pension plans, shortchange pet shelters, and expect that no one will notice."

Misleading
Humane Society of the United States raises tens of millions of dollars a year from Americans who believe their money is trickling down to local pet shelters. Instead, their contributions fund a bloated staff of well-paid lawyers and lobbyists, PETA-style propaganda campaigns, and a hefty executive pension plan.

Charities seem to be like a lot of businesses...

It appears ya gotta read the "fine print" in their documents/contracts/Articles of Incorporation to actually know what their doing. Life used to be not so complex or did we just not know and trust people/charities to do the right thing.

That was interesting... thanks Slinky.

Do NOT confuse the Humane Society of the United States with your local Humane Society. They are totally different with totally different goals. I bought some pure-bred cats last year and was looking at some of the breeder's websites and it appears that the HSUS has declared war on pet breeders. They seem to be trying to outlaw having pets and there are hints they even want to ban eating any meat (ban raising any animal for food).

If you want to help animals (and pets), donate to your local shelter.

For those that are curious here's one of the cats I got (the very last picture on the page isn't her, it's another cat).

I've gotten to the point that I keep most all our donations local. And even w/local charities, I do NOT donate to those that employ professional fund raisers. I want to help CHARITIES, NOT professional fund raisers who get the bulk of the donations.

Hello Pet Loving Apneans!

I volunteer for a small licensed animal shelter. A better way to describe it would be a small network of foster homes. We are a tax deductable (501c3).
We have absolutely no paid staff. 100% of proceeds go to helping the dogs with the exception of federal & state licensing and insurance.(I should also mention that business cards were purchased, which don't directly help the animals but it does help them get adopted) The majority of our funds go to vet care.
We incorporated in Aug 2007 and had rescued 90+ animals by summer of 2009. We have 2 unpaid trainers on staff.

If you are an animal lover, there is no better sense of fulfillment than volunteering and making a difference.
