equipment question

Post by cybermom53 » Tue Mar 23, 2010 8:47 pm

How often do you replace parts with your equipment? I've been using the ResMed Mirage Softgel Nasal Mask since mid-January. In a conversation with the supplier today, she said I should be replacing the nose piece every two weeks? She also said I should replace the filter on my machine every two weeks. I've had it since mid-November and haven't changed filters yet. Anyway, do I need to do this? Insurance does pay but only 70 percent plus I have to cover the deductible first. Anyway, it just seemed like that I've done pretty well without replacing and wondered if that schedule is overdoing it? Thanks for any advice you have.

you might want to get to $99 in purchases at cpap.com of supplies like this -- you won't have to deal with deductible and I bet you will pay less than your 30 % if you had met your deductible

get a spare hose(s), extra filters, extra mask, extra mask cushions, some quick connects and whatever else you want and think you will need over the next 6 - 12 months

I change my filters about every 3 weeks or so, but I live on a horse ranch that's on a dirt road.
I get a new mask every 3 months or so.
The ComfortGel I had needed a new gel/seal after about three months -- I presently use an Activa LT and I've had it for 3 or 4 months and the seal is still good - just the headgear stretched out. You might want to get a spare to have around, but every 2 weeks isn't realistic.....
I should probably do filters every 2 weeks, but......
You'll know when you need the gel piece when things just won't seal properly. If that happens, check the headgear to make sure the elastic still has some "spring" in it.
I clean my mask about twice a week....sometimes once. I have never cleaned my humidifier tank - just keep adding distilled water (I found that if I clean it, the seal goes bad and I need a new tank in 3 months, so unless it's growing something - I don't worry about it. I've had my present tank for over a year....I also have a new humidifier that I haven't installed yet). I've also never cleaned my present hose.....I have a cover on it, but I've had no issues with it.....
That's just my schedule. You do whatever makes you comfortable!!!!!! I'm sure there are some that will read this and go....Ewwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!
All that said.....Fortunately I have excellent insurance coverage and don't pay for supplies.......
good luck
cheers

The filter should be replaced based on the replacement schedule listed in the operating instructions included with your machine. My machine recommends every 3 months. The mask nose pieces should be replaced when you can't get a good seal. It's a good idea to have spares of everything on hand.
