Feeling really cold when I wake up in the morning....

Post by pb5927317 » Mon Feb 15, 2010 11:18 am

Has anyone experienced the problems of feeling really cold when they wake up after 6-8 hrs of CPAP use? I keep my house 74, but I wake up freezing.

I set my humidifier at 3 out of 5. My pressure is 20.

Pressurized air can have that effect on the user. Your body temperature is (supposed to be) 98.6 and you're being "inflated" with air temperatures that are less than that. So, it would be natural to have that experience. Just be sure to keep enough covers on you.

I had a funny experience when I had my sleep study......or I think it was funny to the gal monitoring my sleep study. The room was pretty warm to begin with and I had most of the covers off. It was a split-study, so, part-way through the night when she put the mask on me and turned on the machine, it wasn't very long and I was grabbing for the covers. She even showed me that on the video replay.

I use a heating blanket in the winter, because my husband likes the temperature in the bedroom at about 64 degrees. I am also using a heated humidifier and a res med sleeve covering my tube, but still get rain out in the mask and wish my air coming through the tube was just a bit warmer. So, I have finally broken down and purchased an Aussie heated tube from Austrailia. Here is the link: http://www.sleepzone.com.au/. Cost is $139.00.

If you feel that the air you are receiving is not too cold, but you are cold, a trip to the doctor might be in order. Sometimes Thyroid issues can cause a person to feel unusually cold.

Two things come to mind.

First you probably are not moving around as much. This can make you feel colder when you awaken. More blankets can help.

Second, as 20cm H2O you have a small hurricane roaring through your mask. Though the amount of volume you breathe does not change, the amount of air being pushed pretty hard through the mask may in fact cause more colder air to lower the temperature of your lungs.

So, how do I solve that type of problem? My ASV kicks the pressure upto the 23cm H2O range every night. Well, I do three simple things that seem to help. First, I put a hose cover over the hose. That seems to help keep that strong airflow from picking up more of the cold from the air outside the hose. Second, I point the air intake AWAY from the outside wall (and away from the bed). This allows somewhat warmer air to circulate into my unit. Third, I route my hose under my neck to allow me to warm the hose with my body heat. Of course, a heated hose wrap might be another solution.

Hope that helps.

At that pressure, you should be using a Bi-PAP machine instead of a CPAP.
(especially something that is data-capable so you can monitor your therapy)

I am so trying to make this happen, but my DME says my doctor doesn't contact them, and the doctor says the DME never calls.

Can you help me understand better how the Bi-pap will help?

I actually titrated at 24...if that matters.

So the years of waking up sweaty wasn't because I just had to many blankets on, or the house was too hot? It was apnea wasn't it. Well heck i have had it since I can remember most likely.

Boy, you sure have a team of idiots working for you!

Links to bi-level therapy:

http://www.respironics.com/BiLevelTherapy.asp

http://www.resmed.com/au/clinicians/sdb ... erapy.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Positive_airway_pressure

Basically, through a bi-level titration, one pressure is determined for inhale pressure (IPAP) and one pressure is determined for exhale pressure (EPAP).
The EPAP pressure is set to where it eliminates the apneas and the IPAP pressure is set to where it eliminates the hypopneas.
It can get to be really complicated stuff (depending on the person's breathing patterns), but those are "the basics".

Why doesn't your doctor just write you a prescription for one?

Obstructive Sleep Apnea can be one cause of that problem. It could indicate your body is working hard to try to clear the obstructions. A couple articles that discuss this include:

http://www.medicinenet.com/night_sweats/article.htm
http://www.webmd.com/menopause/guide/8- ... ght-sweats

However, here is a research paper directly to point:

http://annfammed.org/cgi/reprint/4/5/423

It concludes:
Night sweats are associated with several sleep symptoms. Both night sweats and sleep disturbances are commonly experienced by adult primary care patients. When their patients report night sweats, clinicians should consider asking about sleep quality and sleep-related symptoms.

My DME is going to be replaced with another company starting March 1st. I talked to the new company today and she said she will be able to fix the wrong machine issue with no problems then.

I am going to meet my Doc finally next week.
