Photo resizer or cropper

Post by LilBuckaroo » Thu Sep 22, 2005 3:49 pm

I would like to post my picture to the forum. I have 2 pictures that I had taken with a camera that it not digital. A scanned copy of the photos is saved on my hard drive. Is there a free program that I could get and use to crop and resize the photos?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I know that I can count of fellow PAPer’s to come to the rescue.

Thanks

Gimp from http://www.gimp.org is my suggestion for the most powerful free software. It is essentially a free version of PhotoShop and even the source code is available if wanted.

However it is not very intuitive. Helps if you know PhotoShop.

Free & has intuitive ease use - that has to be http://www.irfanview.com/

But I actually used photoshop to do mine.

The challenge is to get a pic down to 80 x 80 pixels & 6k size (needed to meet cpaptalk reqts) - that is not easy - I had to convert to greyscale as if it remained a colour pic of the quality I wanted to use wouldn't go below 7 kb without squashing my face in cruel ways.

The image should be converted to a gif type file as gif tends to have the best packing algorithm in the low sizes. Jpg gets very 'lossy' if you drop the quality. PNG is very similar to gif but seems to be slightly larger & I couldn't get my image as a png type below 7k in size.

If anyone has an image & wants it reduced to the best quality that meets cpaptalk specs, PM me as I am happy to do it for you.

Cheers

That sure should do the job. It has all the elements - convert, resize.

Just as a guide, the essential steps to creat an avatar from any image ...

1) Get a good image manipulation program (such as those suggested)
2) Be prepared to do a lot of learning (if needed )
3) Open your image in the chosen software
4) If not already a square picture then crop it using a square (using: mask / marquee / etc:)
5) If you don't square the pic up it will get squeezed
6) Convert its format to 256 color paletted format (if it is a jpeg )
7) Resize the resulting image (now 256 bit paletted image) to 80 x 80
Save as a .gif file
9) Check its size if greater than 6kb then repeat 7 (go to 65 x 65 then 60 x 60 etc:)

If the image scrunches & mangles your good looks, then start again but convert it to greyscale & try again.

Any other suggestions also very welcome - am sure we have lots of talented image munchers here

Cheers

I use irfanview. Nothing could be easier. You go to Resize/Resample, make sure pixels are checked. Look for whatever is larger, the width or the length and make that number an 80. The other one is automatically changed to keep the ratio, and you save it. Voila, ready for posting!!!

Look forward to your photo, Tenpin!

Try Picasa from Google.

Using the timer on my digital camera, I took this photo of myself to the left while I was sleeping. As you can see, it does a pretty good job of capturing and editing realistic images.
