Post by tiredinde » Mon Aug 22, 2005 6:39 pm

Does anybody know what stage sleep a person is in if they are dreaming? I have heard conflicting reports.[/b]

Most dreaming takes place in REM (rapid eye movement). I'm not sure if "REM" is really considered a "stage" of sleep. The sleep stages 1, 2, 3, 4 are different from "REM".

I guess one could call "REM" one of the normal cycles of sleep, rather than a "stage" in and of itself.

Here are some links about sleep stages and REM:

Rem is a stage of sleep, just like the others (which also cycle).

Unlike the others, which are identified by numbers, and can be distinguished by their EEG, REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep is idenitified by a name, and (would you believe it) by rapid eye movements.

REM sleep is deep, but its EEG is surprisingly like that of waking. Nevertheless, REM is a stage of sleep.

You're right ozij. Thanks for the correction. I should have looked back in the very links I posted! LOL!

This, for example, from the second link:

"Besides these four basic stages of sleep, another, unique, stage of sleep exists, REM."
