Can DME set VPAP so it cannot be changed by me??

Post by peljbl » Wed Jun 10, 2009 11:21 am

I like to be able to change my settings - DME is coming to house to change pressure setting per my DR. If she realizes I have changed anything - can she fix it so I can't get into it again? I have a RESMED VPAP III. I'm going to reset it to the setting she had it at but I was just wondering - anyway she can make it inaccessible to me? Guess I'm a control freak but I also know what works for me - (if you've read my other posts you know the problem). Thanks for any help.

Once you know how to "break in" you know how to break in. There is now way for them to put a "lock or virtual lock" on your machine.

Well, they can TRY. They just seem to underestimate the determination and innovation and ingenuity of so many patients. GaryLand said it all.

There used to be models of cpaps that could be locked e.g. The F&P HC221LE is one example. But I can't think of a modern machine (current models) where any locks apply.

The RT / DME may know the machine settings are different to what they set originally, but have no way of knowing who changed the machine or when.

BUT, if a machine had a communications link (modem, ResTrax or Resm link) AND if the clinic were actually monitoring the machine, they could know it was changed & when. BUT, I doubt there are many if any people here having their machines genuinely monitored to that extent.

I'd be mighty Pee'd off if they tried to restrict what i could and could not do with my own machine! a prescription may be needed for the machine (but even thats not legally required in this country) but the settings are different kettle of fish!

as i have said before, the sleep apnea "industry" is a bit different to those that deal with other chronic health problems, asthmatics and diabetics for example are encouraged and expected to be very active in their own manangment in team with the doctor- i am not sure why sleep apnea seems to be so different- the only thing i can see is that by restricting who alters the machine and downloads results to the DME, its keeping them in the loop and attempting to keep us dependant on them. I guess in states it sounds like the DME's have RT's on staff which is not the situation here- here they are sales people and thats it, so i refuse to let them take control of management of my health- as far as they are concerned i am meant to take my machine to them so they can down load the results to my doctor and even though its not legally required, they will not sell the software to the patient unless we get a letter from the sleep physician, wwelll i know my Doc would have written the letter but i objected to that kind of control so bought the software from cpap.com- because of exchange rates it cost me more to do it that way but the principle is worth it
