Nasal Irritation

Post by Guest » Wed Nov 12, 2008 7:40 pm

I am hoping someone might have some tricks in order to alleviate my annoying nasal irritation problem. Specifically, after a full nights sleep with my cpap mask, a Mirage Swift II, I wake sneezing and with a very runny nose. Over the last couple of weeks, these symptoms have persisted all day long. Pursuant to the FAQ section of the CPAP.com website, this problem can be alleviated by warming the water in the cpap machine's humidifier. Since I got my machine, a Resmed VPAP Malibu, I have turned the heating element on the humidifier to its highest setting, 6. For the first few months, this seemed to work. Unfortunately, over the last few months this has not alleviated the problem.

First, does anyone else have this problem who has a Resmed machine? If so, what have you done to rectify it. Second, does Respironics have a better humidifier. If so, does it heat the water more? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using distilled water? I've had similar problems when I have to use tap water. Must be something in the water I'm allergic to.

Also, when was the last time you replaced your hose and really cleaned your mask? There could be some yuk growing in the hose or mask.

I'm thinking about going from a nasal mask to a full face mask, but for one reason, and I'm hoping somebody here can help me. I've been on the cpap for 5 months, and have stuck with it. The problem is that I am having terrible problems with sneezing and a runny nose, many times for hours on end. The only medicine that has alleviated this problem so far are just temporary solutions because they are ones that I can't stay on, steroid packs, etc. All the ones I have tried that I could take permanently, pills and sprays, seem to have no effect, ie., Singular, Claritin, Benedryl, Xysal (sic), Veramyst, Nasonex, Nasocort, Astelin, etc. What the doctors say is that the cpap is drying me up so much during the night that when I take it off my body is trying to recuperate and is overdoing it. I have changed my humidifier (heated) setting in just the past couple of nights from 2 to 4, and haven't seen a real great advantage yet, although I don't know if it might take a while longer to see the long term effects. I have heard that going to a full face mask might help some since all the air (16cm) wouldn't be going thru my nasal passages, since I"m normally a mouth breather. How about a mouth maks? I've been to an allergy clinic and they found no allergies, which wasn't surprising since I"ve never been allergic to anything. Any ideas? Thanks, and help.

Thanks, hose head. I will try almost anything at this point. Appreciate your time.
