One Week on CPAP - Still Snoring

Post by zaquon » Mon Aug 25, 2008 4:09 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm new here as I've only been on CPAP for one week. With a lot of effort I've managed to tolerate sleep for 7-8 hours at a time on the machine. I have one big worry right now: I'm still snoring. I've been recording myself at night and I hear long periods of snoring every few seconds along with shallow breathing. I'm finding extended periods of this (30 minutes to 1 hr) a couple of times a night. Probably about 1/4 of my sleep.

I don't think I'm leaking out of my mouth or my mask. Could my pressure be off (I'm at ? I don't have a data capable machine so I'm flying blind here other than my nightly recordings.

Thanks!

It could be leaks or a mistitration. Is your mouth dry in the morning? I would think that if you hear snoring and you are using a nasal mask, chances are you are mouth breathing. I use a full face mask, so I can't advise you on how to stop mouth breathing other than to say use a chin strap or tape. That's the first thing to investigate. Until you can rule out mouth breathing, I don't know how you can make pressure adjustments

Good Luck,

If possible ask someone to watch you sleep and they probably tell if you are breathing or leaking from your mouth when you snore.

My mouth isn't dry. I've woken myself up before leaking out my mouth when I wasn't wearing a chinstrap.

I've asked my roommates to come in and check on me if they hear snoring, but they haven't heard any of the episodes. If it weren't for the SA I'd probably have someone who was willing sleep next to me.

It's kind of a tricky differential diagnosis.

Since you have only been on therapy a week, you may want to give yourself a little more time to get used to the treatment, But, if you are confident you are not mouth-leaking, you may want to try to bump your pressure up a little bit. Don't change it too much and give yourself a few days to adjust to the new setting.
