Open mouth insert...

Post by Flying_Norseman » Tue Jun 03, 2008 11:10 am

... humidity??

For those of you having problems with mouth leaking while using a nasal pillow system, try turning up the humidity. I had been doing ok with my Swift II and chin strap, but the leaks were a little higher than I would like. I turned up the humidity all the way to 5 and for the past week my leak rate has gone way down and my AHI has been sub 1.0. I also feel quite a bit more rested and alert. YMMV.

Don't you feel like you're drowning? And does that make the air you're inhaling hotter?

No it doesn't. I don't get any "rainout". I will have to watch out when we start using the air conditioner this summer though. I have a hose cover, but I might need to get a heated one.

Yep, funny you should mention this--for quite awhile I found my dry mouth solution to be running my two humidifiers on high heat, and my mouth wasn't as dry. BUT, for some reason, I begin to feel very congested with the heated air, turned off the heat, no more congestion. If it's not one thing, it's another :<)

If I turn my humidifier up past 2 I can barely stand it. It feels like I am breathing very warm air and that drives me batty.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of breathing warm air, either. I might try turning it up a little, though. Might not be a big difference between 2 & 5. Don't know until I try, huh?

I've had a sore throat for a couple of weeks. Not a huge thing, since I have permanently ginormous tonsils, so it's pretty common for me, but it's irritating. I've been running the HH higher lately to try to help that. Might try 5 and see if I boil alive.

Thanks FNM! Or is that FSM? (Flying Spaghetti Monster - Google it!)

Thanks, Norseman. I'm going to crank it up tonight, but am only cautiously optimistic -- I really, really don't like hot air. Moist, cool air -- that's the ticket.

LOL Babs...

I wouldn't say that the air is too warm. I do notice that my mouth is not dry in the morning anymore so I am probably not opening it at night. It works for me, but as we all know this stuff is very different strokes for different folks.

A friend let me use her SwiftII, after the first night, I realized that my Pass-over was definitely going to be turned to heated. But, on its lowest setting. What I have been doing is turning it on and getting the water really heated, and then turning it off. Has worked out well so far, and no rain out.

Well, I turned the HH up to 4 last night. Woke up several times. Finally took the mask off to check for rainout, and decided it felt more like the mask was "misting" me, than condensation.

Turned the HH back down to 1 and got some more sleep.

I think this is not going to work for me. I don't need to be hosed down while I'm on the hose. I was suprised how much water was shooting out the mask when I took it off. When I just held it up while it was blowing, it wetted my pillow, the chinstrap, and the fleece cover pretty well.

Also, it seemed to increase the congestion in my left nostril. It was plugged most of the night, until I turned the HH back down.

But thanks for playing! I'm sure it will help someone!

No problem. Sorry it didn't work for you. Like I said it is different strokes for different folks. Sort of like the Nasal Aire II.
