Is compliance the same as the sleep efficiency score?

Post by schleima » Mon May 05, 2008 12:52 pm

When I asked my sleep study doc about my compliance rate on my CPAP titration study, she seemed confused. She then told me that I had a 90% sleep efficiency. Is this the same thing?

Compliance vs Efficiency

Post by kteague » Mon May 05, 2008 2:26 pm

Compliance pertains to your usage of the cpap treatment, as in number of days and hours used. Insurances often have a minimum "compliance" required for them to pay for the treatment.

Efficiency is part of the sleep study and rates your sleep during the study. Not sure of exactly the percentage is calculated, but time asleep compared to time in bed is a factor.

That's pretty close to how I was taught to calculate it:
  • First figure out how many minutes between when you first turn out the lights at night to when you wake up AND get out of bed in the morning.
Figure out how many minutes you were asleep.
Divide the minutes asleep by the total minutes.
Multply by 100 to make it into a percentage.
In other words, "sleep efficiency" is a measure of how much time you actually sleep versus how much time you set aside for sleep--as a percentage. In addition to quality of sleep, it's a really important piece of the puzzle. It does no good to spend 8 hours in bed, with or without a CPAP, if you only spend half the time actually asleep.

Doug.

And maybe what you were asking about was your Efficacy data? The others have defined Efficiency data correctly.

Efficacy data would be your Pressure, Leak rate, AHI, AI and HI for the night.

Your sleep doc didn't know this? Incredible!

Not really. Your sleep Efficiency is reported in the results of your sleep and titrations studies.

You can't expect a doctor or anyone else to understand and answer correctly if their understanding of the word you use is entirely different than the meaning you are thinking of.
