OSA awareness...son won speech contest!!

hey all
just thought i'd share something fun with you...

my son, logan, age 11.5, did his class speech at school on OSA/CPAP...he was chosen to represent his class in the school contest and he won!!! there he was, in front of 600 kids, teachers and parents, talking about MY SNORING!!!

it was a little embarrassing, i'll admit, when he explained that he used to think he'd woken up in the middle of an earthquake, only to find that it was just his mom snoring...more embarrassing than that, however, was when he explained some of the symptoms of OSA, which include heavy sweating, frequent urination, obesity....yeah, i'm sure people were looking at me to see if i was sweating heavily at the time...sexy

so after he performed for the school, he went on to the city wide speech competition, which included 20 other schools...he did very well, but didn't progress any further...but he's only in grade six, and has already told me he has plans to make it at least that far in grade 7 and 8

another great thing, aside from my parental pride, was the fact that 3 people approached me during the little reception that followed to ask for more information, and other parents have approached my husband at the school, too

not bad for a little dude, huh?

Pretty good! That is the awareness SA needs. It is not some stranger, but can be the person next door.

Tell your son congratulations for me!!

If we can make more people aware of the seriousness of OSA maybe it will mean fewer accidents and less deaths due to accidents.

Hey Sharon,
That's very cool!!! Congratulations to Logan!!!! Obviously well done!!!

The fact that you and your hubby were queried afterwards means it also sank in and had a very positive effect!!! That's great!!! He may have already saved someone from a lifetime of the health degradation due to OSA!!!!

That is great! Congrats to him and to you! You must be really proud. I think for a kid that age to get into that kind of personal experiences of his family shows a real sense of maturity, too. Who knows, maybe he saved someones life by giving that speech!

Wow, Sharon! That really was a great story.

You know... maybe this early exposure to "sleep", "OSA", "CPAP", etc., will influence him over the next years to think about a career in sleep medicine.

We may have just gotten a glimpse of a future MD, specializing in sleep disorders. A smart doctor raised RIGHT... by a smart, CPAP-using mom!

Hiya, Sharon.

That's a wonderful story. It's amazing how many times our kids can embarrass the heck out of us, but at the same time we are so proud of them for the skill and knowledge they display. I love the way you are obviously encouraging him. The ability to stand up before so many of his peers and present a clever and personal story is one that deserves the heartiest congratulations - and the self-confidence and experience he has gained will stand him in good stead for his future.

While young Logan deserves all the congratulations he is getting (and he has all of mine as well), never lose track of the fact that while he is an individual, much of what he is has been created by you and with your encouragement. So, give yourself a big pat on the back as well.

Congratulations all of you, Sharon. And make sure to tell your son of the people who approached you and your husband.

By choosing that subject, and talking about it so well, your little boy has probably made an important difference to peoples' lives! No small thing for anyone of us, and certainly not for an 11 year old.

Wow! That's awesome when a child cares about the family enough to make a speech about it. I'm sure you're very proud of him. I am proud of him too! It takes a lot of courage on ones part to present a speech let alone one that involves a family member.

Congratulations on raising such a wonderful child Sharon.

Well deserved pride - what a novel way to do so well. The best part is that OSA awareness may filter to a few other families who need the benefit of the therapy.
