Nasal canula as mask alternative

Post by gal in nj » Thu Feb 07, 2008 3:14 pm

How come mask manufacters do not offer this type of mask as an option?

If you don't know what im talking about they are a clear tube with 2 small tubes that fit into your nostrils

I see people using them for oxygen and they look alot better then any of the mask used for cpap machines.

Thanks

I believe what you are refering to is the Nasal Aire II, it is somewhat larger than the oxygen cannulas though.

NAII is a great mask. No fighting leaks, I can scratch my nose when it itches, doesn't move around when I flop around. No clostrafobia.

I agree...it is the best (for me). No pressure points, no sore spots, no strap marks, no leaks, lightweight, etc. etc. etc. It was the answer for me.

My first mask, full face, caused facial swelling and eye swelling (long story and not because it was too tight). Second mask was a nasal pillow system I could never keep from leaking and staying in place and caused too much pressure on my upper lip (felt like my top teeth were moving).

Third time was the charm for me. Not one issue with the Nasal Aire II from the first night. My only move was to go to a larger prong than given originally. Such freedom and comfort.

Are you listening InnoMed? I'll tell you where to send the endorsement money.

gal in nj,

I may be misunderstanding your question, but to my knowledge, a nasal canula is used to let oxygen flow into the nose, but *not under pressure*. CPAP requires pressurized air which would just flow around the cannula, not giving the *pressure* needed for CPAP.

They call it a canulla in the NAII. The prongs are is a bit larger than the standard oxygen canulla and do seal in the nares so as to provide pressure.

They are referred to as prongs on cpap.com. Here is how they describe the tubing:
The tubing drapes easily over the patient's ears in the manner of standard nasal cannula, thus stabilizing the under nose

I like my NAII, only problem is that I have to fight with it to scratch an itch on the part between the two nostrils. Apparently it likes to itch ONLY when I am using the NAII.

There was a news report in the scrolls up top of this forum a few months back suggesting that a simple O2 cannula THAT DIDN'T SEAL would be as effective for OSA as current masks.

Haven't seen any more on that.

I'm an NAII user. The cannula to the NAII DOES seal. It's very effective for me.

Cheers,
B.

Thank you everyone for your input.

I would love to see a mask that was streamlined.
The NAII is still some what bulkier than the cannulas.

A Q-Tip with the cotton pulled off the end works for me. Slide it between the prongs and scratch away.

My fingers are slim enough, I can work one in there and scratch. I have that same problem.

When it's bad, I just tug off the mask, scratch, blow nose, drink water, wander about the house and peer out the window to see what the weather is doing, then wander back to bed and re-mask up.

BTW.... I have never worn the NAII over my ears. Looks incredibly painful to me. I wear it "ponytail" style.

Cheers,
Barbara
