CPAP shuts off when I am asleep on it!

Post by Snuffle-nose » Thu May 12, 2005 6:36 pm

Hello

What does one do about the irksome problem with a cpap that shuts off when I am still asleep on it, nothing like instant suffocation 1st thing in morning!! What a way to start a day! I have S6 Elite and the smart feature is operating on it.

But sometimes it shuts off when I am still wearing the mask! I wonder if it's somthing to do with "central apenoa" or me forgetting to breath? It is quite annoying waking up when cpap sudden decides to shut off! I am on fairly high pressure for my stature as I am a shorty and am small person my pressure is 10 cmsHO2

The smart feature is ment shut off the cpap when you have the mask off. But forget to breath and It'll shut off on you whist your sleeping!! And it will restart once you have the mask back on and breathing into it. But despite this it's been okay with therapy so far. Review is on August this year at the Sleep dr's office etc.
Been on CPAP for a while.....I had moderate apenoa

Two things -- had the same problems

1) turn off SmartStart!!
2) make sure you totally disconnect the humidifier unit from the base
unit every morning. Otherwise you will get that same problem.

Are you using a full face mask ? Or you are leaking huge amounts of air . Possibly through your mouth ? Do you wake with dry mouth ? Switch off the smartstart !

Cheers,

Chris

what does body size have to do with the pressure you use? I've not heard of a relationship there.

Does anyone have any thoughts about this?

Meister,

I have question....I have a ResMed AutoSet Spirit with heated humidifier. I am durious why you say to disconnect the humidifier every morning? Does this apply to mine also? What is the cause that makes you disconnect?

Incidently mine is detached every day when I change the water or pack it to work but am still curious about what you know about this problem.

I've read of some people being able to use less pressure when they lost a significant amount of weight. But as for stature, if all we're talking about is height, I doubt there's much, if any, correlation between a person's height and the pressure needed.

For that matter, depending on the anatomical conditions causing OSA in any particular person, a very heavy person might do fine on a low pressure and a thin person need a lot more. As a side note, same way with "severe", "moderate", "mild" diagnoses of apnea....severe doesn't necessarily mean a high pressure will be needed, or mild mean that a low pressure will work.

10 is a rather average pressure, anyway...seems to be what gets the job done for a lot of people with OSA - big, small, tall, short, mild, severe.

Just my opinion. I'm sure not a doctor.

separating humidifier from PAP box

Post by meister » Sun May 15, 2005 6:24 pm

My PAP kept just stopping on me in the middle of the night.
I took it in and the Resmed techs said that they see this problem
when water from the humidifier gets into the main unit and screws
up the electronic "coupling". If you come home at night and see
wet condensation within the humidifier, then you might understand
that this is getting back into the actual PAP electronics part, and
causing problems.

Meister,

I see what you mean now....is this only a problem when smart start is on? or a problem anytime the codensation gets backed? Probably the latter huh? I love my humidifier but (and there is always a but...I just know everyones gonna call me lazy for this) I hate the task of emptying and refilling the thing every night. What's even more irritating is that because of my job and working 24 hours shifts I have to cart the thing back and forth from work to home every day. But I guess the alternative is a cold damp box 6 feet under.

Do NOT turn it off with the on/off switch. Just use the keypad or smartstart. It will idle very softly so no moisture enters the cpap. Besides . THe Spirit was tested and no damage is caused if water does enter . AT least thats what the literature says. Yo be safe just disconnect the hose to vent the moisture.

Chrisp,

If I allow it to dehumidify itself like you suggest won't that show up in my data as high leak?

No, You turn off the unit by using the big start/stop button that looks like a wing and the machine will go to a cool down mode. There will still be a gentle breeze going through the hose. Take the mask off the hose and you can feel the breeze. You should not be recording any leaks. The only exception I can think is if you using a reslink that has a oximeter attached and that will record for the full ten hours once started.
