Respironics humidifier on #4

Post by Dgrendahl » Sat Jan 12, 2008 7:23 am

O.K., I have found that during this winter I have had to turn my humidifier up to #4 and might even get it up to #5! Does anyone here in "apnea-land" think that one can get too much humidity and that it would harm them? Does anyone know? Does anyone care?

I've had to turn my Resmed Humidaire 3i as high as it would go to provide comfortable humidity during a really cold spell w/high winds that keep the furnace going almost full time drying the house out.

And I don't breathe well w/too warm, humid air. I begin to feel like I'm suffocating in too much heat and humidity whether from summer weather or CPAP humidifier.

I'd venture a pretty safe guess that one would either encounter "rainout" or uncomfortable breathing if one ran their CPAP humidifier "too high".

Furthermore, I also encountered several days that even at its highest setting my Humidaire 3i wasn't capable of providing enough humidity during a few days last winter and had to resort to switching to a Fisher & Paykel HC 100 stand alone heated humidifier to get enough humidity thru my CPAP. Its not just the Resmed Humidaire 3i, there have been posts by Respironics integrated CPAP humidifiers that also couldn't get enough humidity when the house was really dry. Its not usual, but its also not all that rare for these integrated humidifiers.

yeah i would venture a guess and say it probably wouldn't hurt anything to turn it up, i have had to turn mine up to help with the dry air, i think i cranked mine to 4 one night and paid for it with quite a bit of rainout, and the feeling of suffocating with all that moisture laden air that slinky posted about, but i finally found a happy medium by leaving mine at a 2. i guess you can try and expiriment and see what works for you. HTH, later'z.

I find I need to turn my HH up during colder weather as well, is just more comfortable. Not aware of any adverse side effect relevant to the higher humidity.

It is unlikely that your humidifier would exceed what nature is capable of producing. If you can handle a hot humid day in the summer where humidity levels can reach near 100% without rain, I would say you are pretty safe with a passover humidifier. In addition, your hose temp should not reach a temeprature that would allow the air to become over saturated, as higher temps allow for greater saturation levels, it's the drop in temp that produces condensation/rainout.

I also don't think that the manufacturer would produce a humidifier that would allow the air to become so saturated that it would be considered unsafe. Although I am not sure what level "unsafe" would be. I keep my humidifier at 5 all the time, and have had no ill efects other than running out of water after about 7 hours.

After I had my septoplasty surgery last winter, my ENT told me to keep my humidifier on about 4. He said get all the humidity you can stand. I can only stand it on about 2.

I read that our interior air in winter is dryer than the Sahara. You might find it more comfortable to add moisture to the air in the house using a vaporizer or humidifier. This helps your skin and furniture also.
