Ok, this is interesting...

Received my Infineer card reader today and installed it. The install went fine, card reader recognized by the computer and EncorePro, data downloaded without any issues, viewed data (cool) ...went to read the card again and I get:

"...error with SmartCard. Check connections and try the operation again.
Error Source:RespironicsSmartCard2.Type0.1
Error Number:80040208."

--edit begin--
New error message now, The SmartCard has been corrupted. You must format this SmartCard in order to use it for compliance recording or to create a prescriiption. Click on SmartCard Utilities on the menu and then select Setup to format the SmartCard.
Error Source: RespironicsSmartCard2.Type0.1
Error Number:8004020D

This above error has been posted here before and recently from what I see. I have configured the windows service to autostart as suggested.
--end---

Previous to this I received a message that I needed to format the card to make it usable. I did not format the card.

The card reader still shows in the Windows XP device manager with no error status. However all I get is the above error message upon each attempt to read the card.

Anyone experience a similar issue such as this?

Also, does anyone here have info on these cards as to their memory configuration and OEM origin? Anyone can get custom made cards for their company. These are not some propriatary configuration just developed solely for the use of Encore software developers. Smart Cards come in 8KB, 16KB and 32KB for the general standard. There are other memory configurations but these are the most common. I'm going to look into this and experiment with a handful of cards that I have and see what I come up with as far as 'generic' compatibility and hopefully find the right card to purchase in bulk.

and to rule out any computer noob variables... I am a IT support specialist/consultant/etc. and work with computers and related equipment as a profession, so I am not new to troubleshooting hardware and software problems.

You might check out this link for help. If not, there are other links listed in the FAQs. viewtopic/t21953/CARD-READER-FIXREAD-THIS.html

This is from DSM:
lAfter 1st running the services.msc program I mistakenly thought it was something new that I hadn't seen before. Then the penny dropped & I realized that this was the normal services set we use to activate windows services such as IIS & ftp etc.

There is a very easy way to access these. I have created these screen grabs which hopefully speak for themselves.

The above windows panels were set to display icons. Some computers will just show them as a list of items. But, the names are the same.

1) Open the 'Control Panel' & doubleclick 'Administrative Tools'
2) In Administrative Tools doubleclick the 'Services' entry
3) You should now see the services panel - scroll down ...
4) until you locate the 'Smartcard' entry - doubleclick it
5) Set 'Startup Type' to 'Automatic' & click 'Apply'
6) Return to services & check it shows Automatic for startup
o work!! I would think XP would work the same as follows:

Click on run (or windows-key R) and type services.msc.

Scroll down to Smart Card. Right click it. Click properties and where it says start-up type, make it automatic.

Reboot (or click "start" and reboot on normal schedule)

Your reader will now work.

Good luck.
Susan

Thanks for the info.

update on my progress with this situation:

Bad news is that I did have to format my card Good news is the Encore Pro software is able to read my card again. Why this happened, who knows, I'm working on that.

I have since moved my reader from a USB hub to a dedicated USB port and refreshed the device drivers. Tried reading card again...works ok thus far. Glitch? hmm perhaps. Hoping I don't blow out my data again on each consecutive download.

Not done with this issue...need to get to bottom of it.

I think it was 6ptstar that pointed out to me that you had to use a USB port on the computer and not a hub as the reader will not work using a hub.

Please.

And if you get a chance, can you figure out why the Encore Pro Smart Card fails to record a night's data now and again?

Thanks!

Susan

That would be because you have a "M"agic, it's a built in problem, you get it for free with the "M", it's a feature. The "Classic" doesn't have the new feature. Jim

I have "Tank" data loss, when I don't get the card back in the machine or when I use it too long (over 7 days) and less if I shut the machine and then come back for another session. As long as I have 7 sessions it's fine. Jim

Sorry Susan, I think you've got a loooong wait for that one! I think a number of us have come to the conclusion that it's most likely "firmware" (software more or less permanently written into a read-only chip) which means that Respironics would have to fix it [hah]! I've been a programmer and systems programmer for over 40 years and just don't have access to that darn firmware or the source code. Missing an occasional day is not really the disaster that it seems like at the time

Thanks, Mindy. (I think )

It's true that the loss isn't a big deal over the long haul, but it only seems to happen on those nights when I really, really want the data!

Hi Susan,

I gotta agree with you on that one! That has happened to me more than once.
