CARD READER FIX--READ THIS!

Post by socknitster » Tue Jul 10, 2007 9:15 am

If you have been struggling to get your card reader (smart card) to work, please read this thread:

viewtopic.php?p=189601#189601

It has worked for several of us here.

Jen means this:
lindychris wrote:I got it to work!! I would think XP would work the same as follows:

Click on run (or windows-key R) and type services.msc.

Scroll down to Smart Card. Right click it. Click properties and where it says start-up type, make it automatic.

Reboot (or click "start" and reboot on normal schedule)

Your reader will now work.

Good luck.

Jen,

You're an angel

I've been having this problem for a while but never posted it. Just deleted and reinstalled the reader software/drivers whenever it happened (not too often, just when I bumped the USB cord out)

See, I leave for a week or two and get just the advice I need when I log back in!!!

You rock!!! (and so does LindyChris)

You're an angel
You know, I was wondering what those things were that were sprouting on my back!

Seriously, I just wanted to draw as many people's attention to this as possible so it didn't get buried before it could help people.

I would hate for people to give up in disgust like I was contemplating

Thank you! As much as I try to catch all the posts I'm interested in, I missed this and wouldn't have caught it had you not brought it back to our attention.

Perhaps this could go in the archives somewhere so it doesn't get lost. I don't have this problem, but for those who do it would be really helpful.

I haven't been around long enough to know how that is done, but if anyone does, please do it. I think it could really help a lot of people. I didn't know how or why I was doing it, only that it worked!

Thanks here too -

I could never figure why my own setup worked sometimes & not others. This looks like a cause - I too have had the experience of shifting the Mako reader from port to port & it working just once.

So again thanks to LindyChris for the info & Jen for keeping it alive.

10 points to both of you

I have shoved a refrence to this into the Sleep Apnea Wiki at http://sleepapnea.wikia.com/wiki/Smartcard_Reader
I don't really understand this one. If some-one could write a clear explanation whichn will work for most people about this fix, I will very happily improve the Wiki.

After 1st running the services.msc program I mistakenly thought it was something new that I hadn't seen before. Then the penny dropped & I realized that this was the normal services set we use to activate windows services such as IIS & ftp etc.

There is a very easy way to access these. I have created these screen grabs which hopefully speak for themselves.

http://www.internetage.com/cpapinfo/sma ... index.html

The above windows panels were set to display icons. Some computers will just show them as a list of items. But, the names are the same.

1) Open the 'Control Panel' & doubleclick 'Administrative Tools'
2) In Administrative Tools doubleclick the 'Services' entry
3) You should now see the services panel - scroll down ...
4) until you locate the 'Smartcard' entry - doubleclick it
5) Set 'Startup Type' to 'Automatic' & click 'Apply'
6) Return to services & check it shows Automatic for startup

There you go John! What DSM posted should be perfect for your wiki. I have no idea what any of this mumbo jumbo is for, only that it works!

Ok, so I updated the Smartcard Reader Wiki page.

Does it make sense?

Will it work for the newbie?
