Anyone notice DECREASE in APPETITE since cpap?

Post by socknitster » Mon Jul 23, 2007 7:17 am

OK, this may sound dumb, but I'm not as hungry as I used to be. My whole life I woke up ravenous--food first thing on my mind. Now I'm sometimes FORGETTING to eat. Yesterday I realized I hadn't had breakfast yet when my family was talking about lunch and I still wasn't hungry! I ate anyway at that point, but geez. You would think that I would be losing weight but I don't like scales, so I don't know.

I do know that I gained prob 10 lbs or more in the weeks between diagnosis and getting 100% compliant.

I wonder if this has to do with the grehlin/leptin hormonal pathway that has been discussed here b4? Supposedly w/ bad sleep these hormones that control hunger and appetite can get out of whack. Maybe this is the first time in my life that I'm sleeping well enough for these hormones to be normal. It is a very weird feeling. I am eating waaaaaay less and not missing a bite. The sugar cravings I used to have every afternoon are gone. Now if I get my chocolate fix, it is out of habit and for pleasure, not because of cravings.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone else noticed the same thing.

Jen

Oh yes, the powerful urge to eat bushels of salty, crunchy carbohydrates is greatly diminished. I have easily lost weight.

I too have noticed a change in appetite as well. I forgot to eat breakfast and lunch on Saturday until my husband reminded me to eat.

Same here. I used to eat my meals and graze thru the rest of the day, little snacks continually. Now I'm lucky if I remember to eat anything until dinner. I would probably skip that too but DH needs his dinner at 5.

I thought I was the only one who had. Now I'm just waiting to drop some pounds.

Me, too, since I became fully compliance about 18 months ago. However, I'm still waiting to see any weight drop!

This makes sense because untreated OSA really messes up the normal blood glucose and insulin processes that typically happen at night. That's how untreated OSA causes Type II diabetes over time. If your treatment is successful it stands to reason that nighttime blood glucose and insulin processes would return to normal!

I haven't missed a meal in years, When I take a country drive cows and pigs hide in the barn out of fear. I eat 1/3 of what I did four years ago and have gained 30 lbs in two years. (since the heart attack) I also am pushing insulin at record levels. Jim

Add to that we can no longer do any exercise to burn fuel, even walking more than 100 ft, one flight of stairs, max. It makes me mad at the things I can no longer do. Two years ago it wasn't a problem. Jim

I guess that once on CPAP for a while, both oxygen levels as well as blood sugar levels stabilize, reducing cortisol release, therefore reducing the cravings. And with regular oxygen to the brain, perhaps the body/brains feels nurished better overall.
