Going Bare

Post by johnb2 » Sat Apr 28, 2007 11:20 pm

Been using CPAP just over 1 year. However, I lost 30 pounds on weight watchers and decided to try sleep without machine. Cool beans! Slept like a proverbial log! Will wonders ever cease?

Congrats on weight loss.

However... I wouldn't be going bare without a follow up sleep study and approval from your Dr.

Just because you lost weight is no guarantee that the sleep apnea has went away.

Second that-also am down to IBW-I''ve still got OSA...and had to find a new interface.

The best part is I don't snore anymore, according to my wife, the #1 expert and light sleeper. I have been waking up as rested as with mask. I told her the minute she hears a snore to poke me and I'll put mask on.

Well, snoring isn't always indicitive of OSA. Honestly, go get a sleep study done, for your and your wife's peace of mind if nothing else. If they give you the green light, then congrats!

Along with what blarg said, it may have been the OSA that created the weight gain in the first place.
I can sleep (naps) without snoring, too (sometimes). But, I can't sleep as long without being attached to my PAP....and don't want to.

Keep an eye on your blood pressure, too.

I also know a lot of people who lost weight on Weight Watchers that put it back on, too.

I lost 105 lbs and nothing has changed for me. Have a great sleep with mask and the times i had to do without....leaks, broken mask, sore nose i had a terrible sleep with many arousals and was tired next day. i think i will stick with it. I too think the OSA came before the weight gain.

Doc originally told me that if I lost 15 lbs the Apnea might go away, lost 25, guess what, it didn't go away.
I also went on a dental appliance which stopped my snoring, Guess what, follow up sleep study showed my oxygen levels dropping into the 70's.
In the many years that I have suffered from Apnea I have tried every conceivable solution and the only thing that works for me is BIPAP!

I just want to go back to sleep!

johnb2, congratulations on the weight loss--that's great!

Due to my history--sleep study 9 years ago showing no OSA, 50-pound weight gain, then sleep study two months ago showing OSA (19 AHI)--I believe my OSA is cause by the weight gain, as does the sleep doc. But, as irritating as the sleep studies are, if I am fortunate enough to lose the weight, I will get another study done, just to make sure.

I know they're a pain, but I think it's really best to have one done so you'll know for sure.

Pam

I am thrilled for your weight loss........just remember, "The man who stops struggling in quick sand.........is still in the quick sand!" Best of Luck

Went back to mask wearing last night. I found an additional benefit in that it helps my allergies due to the filtration.

Congrats on the weight loss!

In Australia, sleep physicians tell their patients to come in for another appointment (and probably another sleep study) if they lose at least 10% of their body weight

That's great, John! Good that you lost the weight and good that you are using your CPAP again.

I've never snored and my BMI is 21.5 (in the middle of average), but I have moderate OSA.

My sister-in-law was dx'd with OSA and had surgery that stopped her snoring. She and my brother are under the impression that her OSA is gone. She claimed she would never wear a mask so surgery had to be it. Next time I talk to them, I'm going to suggest that she have a followup study to make sure.

I don't have any trouble wearing the mask - and when I had my sleep study last year I weighed 378 pounds and the techs interrupted my snoozes by telling me I needed a mask, NOW. So, newly masked I slept like a log rest of the night. The mask is my friend.
