Descaling a water tank

Sorry if this tip has been posted before but FWIW

I have found the most effective way to remove and clean the white powdery scaling that occurs over time in my ResMed water tank, is by a soak in the descaling solution I use for my Espresso Coffee Machine.

50ml dose of solution in hot water left in tank for an hour or more. Begins working noticeably, immediately. Results are like a new tank.
I need to do this approx. every 4 - 6 months. (Our water is not particularly limey by test, but does come from our own artesian well).

If left un descaled...the air seems to get a slightly burnt smell when the tank drys out during a nights use.

I use a Breville product but descaling solution is a simple solution of : Citric Acid, Tartaric Acid and anionic Surfactant. One could make this ones self, from store bought items.

I thought you were supposed to use distilled water in the tank?

If distilled water is used, no lime/scale will build up at all. Your choice.

White vinegar is your friend when cleaning lime/scale from either your coffee maker or your CPAP water reservoir. A 50/50 mix is what's needed for the coffee maker, been doing this for years.

White vinegar is both safe and effective and can be diluted or used full strength. It has the added benefit of killing microorganisms as well and is 100% nontoxic to humans.
