Masks need to be larger AND tailor made

Post by dnimko » Sun Feb 23, 2025 7:04 pm

Hi.
Since January this year I try to find a comfortable mask... Gosh... This is a journey...

I am 5 feet 2, small head, ordinary nose and small mouth and I HAVE trouble finding something "forgettable" while sleeping.
Every mask I have tried, started with the medium size and ended up at Large.
Every mask I tried, my husband tried it too. He is 5 feet 10, regular size, 180 lbs, he finds all Large masks are too tight.
I should have been able to use a small mask while a Large mask should have fit him perfectly.
For now masks offered to adults are children sizes, maybe not, but it feels like it.

If Ihave this problem, I can't get over the idea that certainly African Americans in general have an issue finding the correct mask... As have other ethnicity with prominent nose or whatever the difference.

It is not normal that an industry fails so miserably sizing it's offer.

If the industry is unable to provide adequate, easily adjustable, standardized sizing, then it should turn to models MOLDED to the client's facial attributes.

After all, podiatrist have understood this a long time ago, we can buy rapidly available orthotics while they offer molding for anybody who wishes more comfort.

Why not masks ?

Personally I ended up with 2 Philips Dream wear standard headgear 1 with large under nose pillow and 1 large under nose + mouth (called full face). It's not normal that at my size I end up with Large masks. I sympathize with the other clients.

Please consider molding
Seriously

Take a look at the F & P Nova Micro nasal pillow mask. It runs small.
Try the fit pack....it comes with 3 sizes of nasal pillows.

Or look at the Eclipse....no headgear and no real sizing issues because there's not much to size.

I understand you to say you are a petite African-American woman with a small head, normal nose and small mouth. I am not sure what a “normal”nose is, so we are left to guess on that point. For the hybrid full face masks, sizing is largely dependent on the width of your nose. When you use the manufacturer’s sizing chart, what does that tell you for sizing?

I agree with you that custom sizing is needed for some folks. THBS, most folks can find a well-fitting mask if they try enough different masks. Some are lucky enough to find that mask on the first try. When trying new masks, get the fit pak so you have all available cushion sizes to try. Once you find the fight cushion, then get the proper size headgear. Most masks come with the medium headgear (or frame if a flow thru like the DreamWear full face).

Good luck in your journey.

Every mask I have tried
With each mask, find that model on YouTube and watch a few videos on fitting and adjusting. It's a learning curve, and it may take a few nights to get things right.
