Help with my SleepHQ data

Post by nickhauser » Sat Apr 13, 2024 9:51 am

I have been using an APAP machine for three months now, but instead of feeling more rested, I am feeling increasingly tired. Although my Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) is always below 5, most of my events are central apneas (CA). I turned off the Expiratory Pressure Relief (EPR), and it helped to some extent, but I still experience CAs. I believe these events are being caused by the APAP machine because I did not have any CA during my sleep study. Can someone help me analyze my data? Thank you!

So how is your overall sleep quality? Sleeping soundly for the most part or waking often during the night?

Do you take any medications of any kind? If so, what?

The bulk of those centrals are awake/arousal related so they are a symptom of poor sleep rather than the cause of the poor sleep. You have to be asleep prior to the event happening for it to matter.
Awake/arousal flagged anything just mean you weren't asleep.

Remember the machine only measures air flow....it can't measure sleep status.

The CA's show to be during higher pressures... I'd be inclined to limit your high pressure to 9 or 10cm as an experiment. What was your prescription pressure from your study? Also interested in your sleep scoring device... Apple Watch?

I see that you have EPR set as "off", which is typically a good idea. However, in my experience turning EPR "on" has helped tame CA's. Start with a level of "1" and increase if that small change makes a difference. Oddly, weeks after turning EPR on I have had to turn it back off because EPR started causing CAs. Seems to be a cat & mouse game. I have also used the same procedure if, for no other reason, I start having trouble with hypo's. I know this all sounds weird, but you really do not have many options to try to get CAs controlled.
