Amazon filters

Anyone ever use the no-name brand of filters available on Amazon? Well, not no-name but you know what I mean, no real brand name.

Back when the Phillips recall surfaced, I purchased a ResMed AirCurve 10 out of pocket. At the time I also purchased a bunch of hypoallergenic filters. I just ran out and after checking with my DME found out that the hypoallergenic filters are not available through them, just the standard filters.

After checking on Amazon I found hypoallergenic filters, and they are VERY inexpensive. A 60 pack for around $11. That price is WAY less than I have to pay, even after insurance pays their share.

The above link shows a good comparison of the "regular" ResMed filters and the hypoallergenic filters...and this is from ResMed and shows their OEM products.
Note that the S9, AirSense 10 and 11 models all use the same filter.

And DMEs CAN supply the hypoallergenic filters if they just would but they don't because they would rather offer aftermarket filters because they get paid the same from insurance company no matter the brand name or "regular" vs "hypoallergenic"...so they are going to buy the cheapest they can buy and supply that cheaper (in terms of cost to them) product so that they can make the biggest profit. So your DME COULD get you those hypo filters if they really wanted to but they don't want to. ResMed still sells the OEM hypoallergenic filter but it's not easy to find unless buying directly from resmed. I would bet my last dollar that your DME's filters it does offer isn't OEM from ResMed but some sort of aftermarket brand like Sunset or whatever brand and not ResMed name brand.

Now about those aftermarket filters available on Amazon....over the years I have tried a bunch of them and some were total crap and some I couldn't tell the difference between their aftermarket product and the name brand product.
I do have a ResMed packaged hypoallergenic filter on hand to compare to. They can be found on the internet but you gotta dig deep to find them.

Right now I am using aftermarket hypo filters that I got from Amazon at dirt cheap prices.
I don't remember the name...sorry but maybe I can find it if I search past Amazon orders.....if still available but you know how it is with Amazon sellers sometimes.

So.....IMHO when it comes to filters that we get from Amazon....buyer beware...some are good and you can't really tell the difference and some are total crap. In terms of functionality they probably all do a decent job but I have my own personal preferences in what I expect a filter to look and feel like to make me happy with the product.

I have taken them out of the big package and put in little plastic baggies so I don't remember the brand name.

I can't swear to it though.....I know I have bought more filters off Amazon in the past but this one is all I could find.

I change the filter when it looks yucky...not often and certainly not twice a month...maybe every month or every other month. I live out in the country so it's dusty and the house was built in 1940s...so I am sure the duct work is far from spotless....and I have pets.
I have a friend who lives in town and he changes his filter maybe once every 6 months and admits it doesn't look all that dirty after 6 months.

Yep, Sunset filters, that's what my DME pushes. Sunset does make a hypoallergenic filter, but my DME apparently isn't interested in supplying them it seems.

IF (big if)....that is what I am indeed using now then they are so much like the name brand filter, that I keep on hand to compare to, I really can't tell the difference...yeah...more than just okay and why I use them. I am pretty sure I got rid of the "crap" filters once I decided I didn't like them for whatever reason.

Probably I took these above out of the box and put them in little baggies and tossed the box.

I guess I'll go ahead and order some of these then. Unfortunately, I don't have any of the OEM hypoallergenic filters left to compare them to, just the standard filters by Sunset. But at $11/60 filters, I'll give em a try.

I found an extra OEM hypo filter that I had stashed away in my cpap carrying case. I'll compare this to the filters that I just ordered from Amazon.

Okay I looked for an OEM hypo filter to compare with what I have been using (assuming that what I have been using is from the Amazon link I posted above).....I say I assume because I can't prove it and you would just have to know me and my filters....unless they are horrible in quality I go ahead and use them. I am the queen of cheap.

Anyhow...assuming they are what I bought from Amazon a while back....I compared the OEM hypo filter to those hypo filters and visually extremely close in how they look. Maybe the aftermarket filter is a tiny bit darker in color but then again these I looked at (half a dozen) weren't in the little baggy (can't find the baggy...don't laugh) and instead were just laying out on my dresser so the very slight difference in color just simply could be from being exposed to the room air for months and months and months and remember where I live and I have pets. My house is dusty....no way around it.

Comparison of how they feel....if there is a difference I really can't feel it.

Close enough for government work as they say.

I am apparently having a run of bad luck with filters from Amazon - the ads show a nice sealed foil bag and when they arrive they are in a plastic bag loose.

I think OK, maybe they order bulk and pull 60 out of the box of 1000 and ship them. Then I compare them to the real deal I get from my DME (Apria) and you can see through the amazon filters and the real deal ones you have to shine a bright light through and still can't see through them.

Makes me think of the difference in furnace filters between the old blue floss ones and a hepa white with fan folds.

Given the amount of pollen the pine trees all around me put out I am just sticking to what they send me every 3 months. That is 9 filters in individual plastic bags that look like they are marked at whatever factory with resmed logos and part numbers. I don't change them twice a month, but I do have an alarm set on my phone to change them once a month or at least check them. When the trees are putting off their pollen I might change them weekly or less. EVERYTHING turns yellow with the stuff for about 3 weeks.
