When to end CPAP
When to end CPAP
I have been on CPAP for over 10 years and my apneas have been consistently at 1.0 to 1.4 for the last 3 years. Do I still need to be on CPAP therapy? Can you ever be cured? I did lose some weight during the pandemic (about 60 lbs) which might be a contributing cause. Thanks for your input.
Re: When to end CPAP
Using cpap isn’t treating the underlying causes (obstructions in your airway). If your physiology has changed then maybe, perhaps you could stop using it.
The only way to know for sure is to have a sleep study without cpap and see how your body does.

Re: When to end CPAP
Get yourself an O2Ring. Use it for a week while using CPAP and look at the O2 saturation data using the software. Then try a week or even just a couple nights without CPAP and look at your O2 saturation data. The first graph below is before I started CPAP and what convinced my doctor to schedule a sleep study and subsequently prescribe the CPAP. Note the number of drops in O2 as well as how low the O2 drops are. The second graph is what I typically do using CPAP. The O2Ring may not tell the whole story, but to me is a fair indication of how or if the CPAP is doing its job.

pretty sure you would have a rough night of it. if I went without my CPAP, I couldn't sleep.
the reason you have a low ahi is because your apnea is being treated.

Re: When to end CPAP
The AHI reported by the cpap is TREATED.
The low numbers only mean your cpap is effective.
I can see fine with my glasses--but can't see crap without them.
Same thing.

"OSAHS [OSA-hypopnea syndrome] is usually considered a lifelong condition, and the patient who drops out of medical care constitutes a worst-case scenario for sleep specialists. Data on unresolved OSAHS have shown the medical community what adverse physiological effects can occur. Furthermore, the patient’s quality of life is detrimentally affected by untreated OSAHS, and treatment cessation increases the odds of a return to pathology. . . . CPAP therapy should be encouraged and supported."-- Sleep Review, "CPAP: When to Discontinue Treatment," Sep 4, 2000 -- https://sleepreviewmag.com/sleep-disord ... treatment/

The people who confuse "entomology" and "etymology" really bug me beyond words.
