How often do you need a new sleep study?

Post by DDICKS » Thu Mar 07, 2024 7:44 pm

Hi everyone,

I am going to be honest, I feel a bit deceived. I was going to use the term 'abused'....but maybe I am being too harsh.

I currently use an S9 VPAP ADAPT based on a 2 night sleep study in 2012. Those machines are quite expensive and sometimes cost-prohibitive, which was my case in 2012. So, I purchased a used machine and purchased all of my own supplies through the years.

Fast forward to today. I am in need of a new machine. Mine is old and starting to malfunction. So, I was referred to a sleep doc. He said that I have to have a new sleep study to determine if I have sleep apnea..... WHAT? I was diagnosed with mixed apnea in 2012.

So, last night I had to have a sleep study. The pre-printed instructions said if I have a hose and mask to bring them with me. I did. So, when I got there, the tech said that I had to have a sleep study without a mask. I was taken aback. The only time that I have had to be without my machine was when we had a power outage at our cabin and I was absolutely miserable the next day.

So, I worked hard at falling asleep. I was hot, the pillows were too lofty for me, the wires made me feel all tied up. But, eventually, I fell asleep. Apparently, I slept less than 1 hour. I woke up miserable. My airway was parched, to say the least, my sinuses were dry and my tonsils felt like my airway was narrowing. I told the tech that I was 'parched'. But, I was told that I could only have a sip of water. Again, I tried to shut my mind off and get more sleep. Again, I apparently only slept another 15 minutes. This lasted from around 9pm until 3am. In that time, I potentially only slept approximately 1 hour.

I drove home in a fog, completely congested with a sore throat, and got home and set my rickety (dying) old machine to max humidity and I finally slept about 3 hours. I am still exhausted from that experience and I was told that I may have to redo it again since I did not 'sleep' long enough.

Have any of you been through this? I just want a new machine because mine is old and unreliable. I cannot sleep without it.

Thank you,
Denise

In my opinion you absolutely need a new sleep study every 50 leap years.
I did a second sleep study in 2013. But I made sure that I new exactly what would be tested. I called to verify the details of the study. I discovered the location I was scheduled for could NOT test for central sleep apnea, which was the only reason for the study. I got that all corrected and got the study I required.

That said I know I have to be responsible and take control of my own health. I listen to all the practitioners that are assigned to take care of my health, then I decide what the best approach is.

I am currently on my second used Aircurve 10 ASV. It is possible to find machines you can "afford".
