Deep breath/flow rate spike and possible arroussals every night?

Post by gurug » Sun Feb 11, 2024 1:25 pm

I think I'm getting close to having my pressure dialed in pretty well to eliminate apneas and flow limitations, but looking back over almost a year of data I see every night especially in the first 2 hours there are spikes in the flow rate with an associated short pause in breathing that I'm assuming is indicative of an arousal. These seem to happen in a pretty consistent pattern of about 10-12 minute increments, but the have occurred at a wide variety of pressures from 7-15cm. Iv been super fatigued and a recent full night sleep re-titration study on CPAP all night showed 0 minutes deep sleep. Only Light and REM.

Are these flow spikes significant?
Any thoughts on how to figure out how to eliminate them if it is significant?

Here is a recent night that seemed pretty good from the breathing, but still had the spikes in flow rate.

Could you provide zoomed-in views of a couple of the places you marked? Maybe around 3 minutes.

The first two look like sighs, and the second two look like very brief arousals. It’s normal to have a reduced flow rate right after deeper breathing. It’s also normal to have brief arousals during the night.

All in all, I don’t think these are a cause for concern. But I wish we had some insight into why you’re so fatigued. Have you been tested for e.g. thyroid, iron, testosterone (if you’re a man), vitamins D, B6, and B12, autoimmune diseases, especially in the connective tissue disease family, and Lyme disease?

It’s natural to wonder about the lack of deep sleep during the test. Unfortunately it’s hard to draw conclusions from one night. But in your place I’d ask the doctor about this.

Thyroid, B and Iron are good. Not much Lyme in the desert. D has been low at prior physicals and taking supplements. Testosterone is on the list for upcoming blood work.

I'm thinking the CPAP might be part to blame. I've never really slept sound since starting almost a year ago. I used to sleep super sound all night (with snoring), but now I'm flipping enough to get the CPAP hose wrapped around my neck :-O.

I've tried looping it up over the headboard. Trouble is I like to roll over on my stomach and put my pillow on my head. I loved the P30i for the top of the head connection, but my hair protested by laying flat under the band. After ditching that mask it took days for my hair get rid of the strap mark.
