Your body can't really get fully relaxed if it has to support itself in a vertical sleeping position. Sleeping while sitting up can be hard on the back. It can also be hard on the lower legs in terms of fluid retention: The heart has to work harder to prevent blood from pooling in your feet when you sleep sitting up.
Do you have a source for this? Not doubting you by any means, but just so I can have a sufficient level of confidence before implementing the switch.

I recognize and fully agree I need to fix the nasal congestion problem. Do you have any additional suggestions for other non-surgical interventions I can try? I'm currently using saline rinse, Nasacort (steroid, like Flonase), Azelastine (anti-histamine spray), and intense anti-dustmite protocols - expensive allergy-focused vacuum, air filter, mattress protector that I apply every Sunday. I also use mouth tape. I've tried breathe-rite strips, but they don't seem to do anything for me. I'm going to try Afrin (not long term) just to see what effect it has. I'm going to try nasal dilators in a few weeks. I saw someone improving their apnea by practicing the didgeridoo; I might try that if none of the above work. Any other suggestions that I'm missing out on? Really don't want to go for surgery.
