Nasl Gel suggestions ???

Post by butterfly » Mon Mar 14, 2005 8:12 am

At the suggestion of serveral here in this forum, I have been using the AYR Nasal Gel for a dry nose. However, does anyone have a suggestion for something that will HEAL a sore on my nostril from my Nasal Air prong. Well, in fairness, I had a cold and had a very sore nose from that when I started my mask, and the nasal prong has irritated it to the point it is so sore and bleeding every morning. I had to yank the mask off at 3:30am two mornings in a row because I was so sore on that ONE nostril. I am going to just have to take a night off of the mask to get this one sore healed. But I don’t know what to use that would also be safe for the tubing (I was told, I believe, not to use anything with a petroleum base because it would harm the tubing material.) But I need something with some healing properties, not just the AYR Nasal Gel, for now until this problem goes away.

I know once this sore gets healed, I will be doing O.K. The other nostril has “toughened up” enough so that it is fairloy comfortable most of the night.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Pat,

Why don't you try AYR gel at night when you are using the pillows and triple antibiotic ointment in the morning while you are without the prongs/pillows. The other alternative is to have an aternate mask to where while your nose heals.

You are correct about the petrol based products potentialy damaging the prong/pillow material.

Have you taken a look at the new Aeiomed aura patient interface? It would give you more comfort than the Nasalaire.

Thanks for the suggestion.. And as for that Aura interface ... WEIRD LOOKING!!!! It MIGHT work ... I opted for the NasalAir because during my sleep study the regular mask was just TOOO claustrophobic for me. If the Nasal Air and I just don't get along after a bit, I just might look into this! I'm definitely a side sleeper .. it kind of looks like this might be O.K. for that? Thanks for the link!

Pat,

The aura is not nearly as weird looking in person as the pictures make it look. It looked heavy to me, but it is very light. When it's on it feels no different than wearing a baseball cap. The nose piece is adjustable in all directions and can be fine tuned by bending wires that are in the "hoop".

I used vaseline on my nasal pillows for quite a while and it never harmed them that I could tell. I have read on here that it is bad to use vaseline but haven't seen any ill effects. I was using the vaseline to get a better seal but have learned how to adjust the straps more effectively thus eliminating the vaseline.

You might also try Neosporin ointment (not the cream) with pain relievers. I have used it for several months and it hasn't done any harm to my nasal pillows. I use a little of it just before I go to bed at night and again in the morning. I sure makes my nose feel better. My DME suggested using it.

butterfly, you asked if the Aura is good for side sleepers. I'm very much a side sleeper, turning often from side to side during the night. Aura is suiting me perfectly.

As with any mask I use, I keep the air hose routed upward to hang on the wall about a foot over my head. That kind of hose arrangement lets you toss and turn easily (like a fish on the end of a slack line) without the hose getting in the way or tugging on nose or headgear.

In the same way that I used stabilizing side straps placed lower than usual with my Breeze, I also added some side straps (made my own) down low on the Aura. Keeps it perfectly in place and still let me slide the Aura on and off like a ball cap.
