Sinus mouth breathing and mouth tape

Post by Architect » Thu Jun 02, 2022 2:40 pm

I read a few articles pertaining to mouth breathing worsens sinus congestion. Solution is to mouth tape or glue. Don't know if info is fact or product selling. Has anyone else, come across similar articles ?

Years ago, I had severe sinus congestion, tried to tape mouth, and felt as if I was suffocating, cause no air pressure was passing through my nostrils, I'd rip mask off, tape off. My nostrils would swell shut, severe congestion/inflammation. Scription nasal sprays didn't work. Now I use saline spray non stop all day, nasal rinse 2x, drink tons of water, and a glass before bed, I rarely have congestion anymore.

Guess I'm wondering if those suffering from sinus congestion, if mouth tape help relieve congestion ?

Never heard of such a thing.

Ain't no way in hell am I going to tape my mouth shut if I can't breathe through my nose comfortably.

But then there is a short supply of plain old common sense out there and people touting all sorts of stuff but that doesn't make it true and sure doesn't make it a good idea.

I absolutely agree with you. I was thinking whomever wrote articles, never had severe sinus congestion.

Years ago? Have you had a consultation with an ENT recently? There are good solutions.

Have you discontinued all those rinses to see if the congestion problem returns?

This seems extreme. Here is a study that addresses a less extreme version of this.
Daily long-term use of nasal saline irrigation (NSI) by patients with recurrent rhinosinusitis (RS) can increase the frequency of acute infection by as much as 60%, according to a new study presented here at the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI) 2009 Annual Scientific Meeting. Many called the study "important."

"We have a serious problem with many patients who suffer with chronic sinus disease thinking that the best treatment is daily [NSI]. They think it isn't harmful and so use it all the time,"
Do note that this study is not without its critics.

You might want to reevaluate your DIY treatment.

Thanks friend, over the years my sinus disorder has been maintained, many trips to allergist, ENT, etc.... What has worked for me is saline and lots of water.
