When my grandmother was alive, she would cut all the lilac blooms in her garden,
and put them in Mason jars full of water.
After leaving a fragrant armload on the dining table, she would have one of my brothers
drive her around to leave a few on various family graves throughout the region.
The farthest was her infant daughter, first child, Bessie Louise, who was survived by eight siblings.
Grandma outlived 4 sons, all of whom served in the armed forces--buried in a nearby cemetery.
All her sons returned from serving, but their lives were likely shortened by the after effects.
Traditionally, we recognize those killed in action--
but they also serve who return and suffer for years.
Let's not forget. Please.

Re: In Memoriam
Thanks for that mental imge, CF. It brought back memories of doing similar cemetery visits with my grandmother in some communities not far from where you live.chunkyfrog wrote: ↑Mon May 30, 2022 10:20 amWhen my grandmother was alive, she would cut all the lilac blooms in her garden,

Re: In Memoriam
Where I live now is a ways from where we lived then.
My grandmother lived in Alliance, where my parents and several uncles lie.
Bessie rests in a tiny pioneer cemetery on a hill near Highway 2 leading to Lakeside.
