Any reason I might want to upgrade to Autoset 11?

Post by lazarus » Sat Mar 12, 2022 4:28 pm

I'm doing fine with my Autoset 10. Well, other than some irritating hissing noises from the humidifier before I can get it to align just right each night.

Is there anything you can think of that would be a reason for me to think about paying out of pocket for an 11 just to have "the latest," once they are in stock? And would I be giving anything up that I now have on my 10?

I tried to find a thread here on this to see if there's a consensus, but I didn't find it. Maybe I missed it? Or is it just too new and too hard to get for there to be much discussion on it yet?

welcome to the zoo!

there are a few forum members who have the 11. maybe they will see your post and come in to give you the lowdown.

in the main, you are correct. just too new.

me, i'm not one to go out and get the latest/greatest of anything, so my opinion doesn't really help.
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

One thing I find interesting is the AirSense 11 is using the same motor (internal turbine) as the AirMini!

The AirMini motor is louder than the AirSense 10 motor so ResMed has to pack more sound abetment foam into the AirSense 11 case to quiet the motor noise!

I'm not too keen on the longevity of the AirMini motor has opposed to the AirSense 10 motor.

I've read more stories up here about AirMini's no longer working vs. AirSense 10's! :(

Another con I've heard about, is the hose coming straight out the back and not being able to swivel like the AirSense 10.
To me, that simple design change is a serious flaw that some will find mildly annoying.

They (ResMed) go out of their way to make the machine significantly (30% I believe) smaller yet they don't have the ability to use the 90 degree swivel hose connector on the back and thus someone has to put the machine 4 inches further away from the wall (if the machine is sitting on the back of a nightstand up against the wall) just so a hose can go straight out the back of the machine before it obviously has to bend to go to the user! Or you turn the machine so it's completely facing away from you at an angle so the hose is aimed towards you.

Some around here keep their CPAP's on the floor or on a lower shelf; so to them, real estate on the top of the nightstand is of no concern to them or this design flaw. :|

I don't know why ResMed did this - there certainly is not lots of threads up here mentioning that the swivel connecter on the AirSense 10 sucks or complaints about the 90 degree angle of the AirSense 10 hose.

Sometimes the latest is not the greatest.
I've been so happy with mine, I got another one just like it.
I like that swivel.

I just recently got the AS11 to replace my Dreamstation 1. I like it way better than the Dreamstation as for the swivel for the hose I don't know because I used my Dreamstation without the humidifier so I had no swivel on the Dreamstation. I do have my cpap on top of my night and space can be a bit tight with a lamp and also a Google hub. One thing I did noticed is that it is much quieter with Resmed Air30i mask, I can hardly hear any noise going through the tubes on the side of your face, maybe because of the extra foam for the louder AirMini motor. The biggest benefit for me as that was the only thing I didn't like about the Dreamwear and the AirFit30i masks and put up with the noise (game changer). I also seem to be getting better treatment with it than the Dreamstation but it might be the same with the AS10 which I have never used.

Just an FYI the rated noise is pretty much the same. 11 rated 27 dBA and S10 rated 26.6 dBA per the ResMed website. When I travel with my S10 I don't use humidification. I bought a side cover for the S10 and now leave the S10 humidifier at home. Makes the unit much smaller for travel.

I'm trying to figure out if the humidifier can be removed for a side cover on the 11? That would make it much smaller for travel. The specs for the two machines show them to be very similar in size but I'm guessing that spec is with the humidifier on both units. If the 11 humidifier is removable I'm guessing it is a better travel machine.

The Air 11 is designed for (eventual) side cover use, but so far, there have been no signs of it being available yet.

The AirSense 11 is literally an AirMini, with additional algorithms, in a larger case than a AirMini.

The AirMini and the AirSense 11 use the exact same turbine fan motor inside.

The only reason the decibel level is the same as the AirSense 10, Is due to the excess amount of sound abatement foam used inside of the AirSense 11, to help quiet down the noisy AirMini turbine fan motor!

Time will tell if the AirSense 11's AirMini turbine fan motor will hold up as long as the AirSense 10 turbine fan motor.
With only a two year warranty… There might be some surprises coming in the future!

Edit:
The above was discussed somewhat 3.5 months ago - Dog Slobber had a link to Nick's video breakdown of the turbine motor for both machines.

Considering the possible scaling back of quality,
I might ask for another Airsense 10 autoset.
The eleven still surpasses the "competition"; but listen to your gut.

Oh, man. I'm upgrading from my S9 Auto, which has worked so well for me for years, but I just got the "motor life exceeded" message and have 21903 hours on it. After reading this thread, I'm conflicted now. I was just about to go on CPAP.com and order the AirSense 11 Auto, but if it uses the same turbine as the AirMini -- is that a bad thing? -- I'm just not sure if I should get the AirSense 10 Auto instead.

I'm trying to figure out if there's anything I would be missing by getting the AirSense 10 instead. :|

I don't want to hijack this thread, but this brings up a question. When the "motor life exceeded" message comes up, is it really necessary to get a new machine, or is that just to sell newer models. Assuming I have a backup (waiting for the old PRS1 foamgate replacement) is it safe to wait for problems before replacing my S10 when the message pops up?
