Hoarding vrs planning is a fine line. Long before the pandemic started, we always kept large supplies of stuff including a big chest freezer Learned this is snow country so I wouldn't have to drive on ice and snow to get to a grocery store. When the pandemic hit I had a large unopened Costco package of Clorox wipes which I happily shared with a friend who ran out. My daughter also took some rolls of toilet paper (we had a large costco package of that as well) and gave to coworkers who were out. If that is your normal shopping and you are not buying more than normal, then I wouldn't call it hoarding. Now if you don't normally buy 6 bottles of water and all of a sudden you do then yes this is a problem because the 5 other people who normally buy one gallon didn't get their share. And now there is a shortage.

My question for you dog slobber, yes I do have a question for my rambling , when I refill my stash (I personally keep 2 gallons in reserve +the one I'm using) how many can I buy without being a jerk. If I've had to use two of the three bottles because of the shortages can I buy two bottles or should I then only buy one bottle and hope that by the time I am out again there are more and I can stock back up then ? How do you refill your stash without being a jerk ?

The OP made it clear, when he had the opportunity, he was going to "grab all he could carry.". Then he did.

I just go to the sink, and turn on the tap. But, that doesn't stop me from being a jerk, I can be a jerk for a lot of other reasons.

BTW, I never suggested the op was a jerk.

I described his actions, exactly as they were, hoarding, and one of the biggest causes of shortages, which it is.

Not DS but thought I would offer my own personal rule of thumb and that is that. I evaluate the current supply on the shelf and let that be my guide for "stocking up" in general.

Like back when toilet paper was worth gold....I was in the store and there was only one small pack of TP on the shelves and since I already had a single pack of 6 at home....I didn't snatch up that one pack. I did leave it for the next person because they might be totally out of TP. I actually had this happen to me back early in the pandemic when people were buying 10 packages of 16 rolls per package of TP. I just couldn't buy the last of anything on the shelves if I had it available in my home already.

That remains my personal rule of thumb even today.

For me distilled water lasts roughly one month depending on the time of year...since humidity varies a lot where I live.
It's not the end of the world if I run out of distilled water....at least for me.
Now running out of bottled water to use in my Keurig because my tap water would kill my Keurig in short order...that might be the end of the world for me.

Now the other day after waiting 2 months for a carton of heavy whipping cream...and they finally had 2 cartons in the fridge on the shelves...I didn't buy the 2 cartons...I bought only one.

Finally we all have to remember that my house is only 720 sq feet and while I could use the she shed and the barn for storage or "hoarding"....I refuse to. My own personal line in the sand. Everything I buy makes me go thinking "now where in the hell do I put it"

this talk of hoarding reminds me of what Grammar Girl calls a "familex" story i.e. something that becomes part of family conversations or jokes that get passed down and discussed.

didn't happen IN my family but happened in front of my wife and i. it was during our second year in flagstaff az. now, snow DOES occur in flagstaff. in fact there is a ski mountain available, which brings up a lot of folk from the valley. but on this particular occasion, there was what the locals considered a whopping storm in the works.

as one might expect, grocery stores were crowded. my wife and i were back at the dairy section. there was a twenty something couple hovering near the milk. he had grabbed a gallon and was hesitant to get the last one there. the two discussed it frantically and she finally blurted "no, get ALL the milk!".

we cracked up. not just me and my wife, but the husband as well. so whenever we find ourselves in such a situation, on of us will mock shout "no, get ALL the milk!".

I didn't mean to come of sounding critical of your post DS. I was just wondering on the etiquette for stocking back up. Btw I don't think I could carry six even if I wanted to.

Pugsy thanks, your reply is very helpful and I agree,
I wouldn't take the last one if I had some at home. Its especially crazy around here where one store will be out but there are other stores that might have lots. Unlike where you are, we have a plethoria of stores and they are all over the place in what they have or don't have. Yesterday I looked at three stores for a can of biscuits and couldn't find any, my daughter stopped at another store on her way home and they had lots of biscuits but were out of other things. There is no rhyme or reason it seems to me in what is or to what is out of stock on any particular day. Its crazy.

There could even be a pallet of small boxes full of tiny items stashed in the back
that nobody wants to mess with.

No one goes through a full gallon each week? My CPAP is set on Auto and the reservoir is nearly empty each night. It is the reason I can't raise the humidity level.

No problem getting it here but if it’s a problem build a still and distill your own.

You might be a good candidate to try out the Bleep system on their free trial (only pay shipping).
My daily distilled water usage is down more than 50-75% since trying the Bleep out.

Nope. Your amount of water consumption is abnormal for some reason or other.
I use a setting of 6 (your setting of auto is approx equal to a setting of 4 to give you a sort of comparison) and I might use 3/4 of a chamber IF I was to sleep maybe 9 hours.
Usually I get about a month out of a gallon of water.
You might want to investigate what is causing you to use so much water......in another thread of your own.
First thing to look at though would be your bedroom ambient humidity. Hours of use would be second to look at.
