ResMed S9 humidifier emptying too quickly
ResMed S9 humidifier emptying too quickly
Hey there folks. I am here because of one problem. For some reason the reservoir in my humidifier suddenly started emptying ever night ever before the night is over. I didn't change any settings.
Humidity setting: 4.0
Tube temp setting: 70
I'm sure someone has had this problem. And before I posted this questions I did do some searches on her but came up with nothing.
Thanks!

What is the ambient humidity in your bedroom?
What do your leak numbers look like?

Re: ResMed S9 humidifier emptying too quickly
If you've suddenly turned the heat on in the house, that would do it.
Re: ResMed S9 humidifier emptying too quickly
That may be a contributing factor. Not sure how I can verify one way or another. The problem did start to appear only about a month or so ago and that would be about the time the heat came on for the season. I look into a DIY humidity test.
Thanks!

You can buy a little gadget for not much money that will tell you what the humidity is in the bedroom.
I got mine on Amazon for around 8 bucks quite a while back.
Tells me humidity and temperature.
They are called hygrometers.
This one isn't the exact product I bought several years ago but it is very similar.
https://www.amazon.com/AcuRite-Accuracy ... isorhyg-20
When the ambient humidity in the bedroom is dry the machine has to use more water to be able to deliver the desired humidity setting. When it starts out with drier air it just has to use up more water to get the humidity up to the setting.
Heating (and cooling) will dry out the air in the house.
Also if someone is experience a large amount of excess leak that can also lead to more water usage but usually this takes a LOT of excess leak.
I would bet my last dollar that your ambient room humidity is dry and at the root of the water usage problem.
If the water isn't lasting all night....might want to think about adding a room humidifier to the bedroom.

Re: ResMed S9 humidifier emptying too quickly
When was the last time you tried a lower humidity setting?
All too often, when people experience humidity problems (rain out, dry tank) they try everything but lowering their humidity settings. They want to go with a humidity setting that was set years earlier and hasn't changed since.

Re: ResMed S9 humidifier emptying too quickly
Leak = 35L/M I looked it up and that is on the high side. I use nasal pillows so I may be opening my mouth during REM. Would this explain the fast-emptying reservoir?
And what do you recommend to stop the leaking? Should I switch to a full mask? Don't know where to begin to find the right size and model.
Re: ResMed S9 humidifier emptying too quickly
The 35 L/min leak number from the machine itself is what we call a 95% number and all that means is the leak was AT OR BELOW that number for 95% of the night. Most likely the bulk of the night you were well below 35 L/min but even if you were at 35 all night long I don't see it emptying the water chamber.
I would think you would need to be up around 50 or 60 L/min all night long for the leak to be that much of a factor in terms of water consumption.
I still think that ambient humidity is most likely culprit.
And no...I sure wouldn't go looking for a full face mask with 35 L/min 95 % numbers.
Here's a thread where I had a 95% number of 48 L/min...I have detailed pictures of the leak graph and you can see that while I had some big leak for a little while...the bulk of the night the leak was well within acceptable limits.

I still think you need to check ambient room humidity first of all.
You need to be using OSCAR to really evaluate the leak line and not panic over a 95% number alone.
I sure wouldn't go changing masks without a more proven need. Now if it was around 50 L/min and you look at the graphs and you are spending half the night up around 50 L/min...then we look at figuring out the cause and fixing it.
I don't even bat an eyelash until I see number over 35 L/min and then I look to see how much time I actually spent up there.

This is very helpful! I can't thank you enough. I am going to purchase the hygrometer you recommended.
Re: ResMed S9 humidifier emptying too quickly
I lowered it considerably last night and the reservoir still emptied. I am going with the cause being the dryness of the air in my room.Dog Slobber wrote: ↑Thu Dec 23, 2021 5:14 pmWhen was the last time you tried a lower humidity setting?

If you can use a floor humidifier in your room I'm sure it would help.
