Surgery for muscles that have collapsed
Surgery for muscles that have collapsed
I am having trouble with my sleep. My endoscopy shows collapse of the muscles in my throat.Along with this doctor has also said that my uvula is long and needs to be shorten with surgery. Is there anyone who has got surgery done for these muscles and uvula?
Please get in touch and let me know the effects you had after the surgery with your sleep apnea.
I would appreciate you getting in touch regarding this. I used CPAP only fora few days like 10 days. But i am not ale to use it as it is causing me dry mouth. Please get in touch with your recommendations of getting the surgery done or not.
Thanks.

Re: Surgery for muscles that have collapsed
I know nothing about that surgery…but I would try to make CPAP/APAP (whatever) work for you before undergoing the knife.
Dry mouth is correctable. What mask are you using? If nasal you are probably opening your mouth when sleeping which there are solutions for (tape, training, straps). I use 3M micropore tape to tape my mouth closed. Wash your face to remove any oils, dry your lips thoroughly, make an “inverse kiss” with your lips (drawing them gently into your mouth) and apply 5ish inches of tape sealing your mouth closed. Rub tape gently to ensure a good seal overnight.
If full face mask there are lozenges or other solutions (I’m not really familiar with them, but others will likely be along).
Good luck!

Re: Surgery for muscles that have collapsed
Your doctor sounds like a knife-happy maniac.
I would run as fast as I can AWAY from him!
Surgery is irreversible, and only rarely actually helps.
Most insurance will not cover it, because of the scarcity of positive outcomes.
Lopping off the uvula will interfere with your ability to swallow without
food/drink going up your nose.
As for "fixing collapsed muscles",
I have some swampland I could sell to the "right party" . . .

Many (now older) forum members were talked into that "PPP" surgery yrs ago and not one benefitted - all ended up needing more Cpap anyhow, but it doesn't work as well as if surgery had not been done.

Find a board certified pulmonologist that specializes in sleep medicine. he will tell you surgery very seldom works he will help you with cpap issues. It's what pulmonologists do. go to any ent and he will suggest surgeries before anything else. in the end it won't work, cause other problems and in the end you'll be on a cpap.

Re: Surgery for muscles that have collapsed
I am one of the people that had the UPPP surgery. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea in 1996. At that time, I had a deviated septum and enlarged turbinates which prevented me from breathing through my nose like I should. I would only breathe through one nostril or the other, never both at the same time. The deviated septum portion of the surgery was the easiest to recover from. Even with the splints in my nose, I could breath better than I ever had. The rest of the surgery was a very painful recovery. My throat was very sore for about a week, and it was over three or four years before I could enjoy eating spicy foods again. It did relieve many of my symptoms at that time (I no longer snored, and my wife no longer heard me stop breathing when I slept). I never bothered to repeat the sleep testing after my surgery. In 2014 I was in the hospital for knee replacement surgery, and the nurses put a note in my file about my flood oxygen level dropping a lot when I slept. After I was discharged from the hospital, I was prescribed supplemental oxygen when sleeping. I finally got my bi-level machine in May of 2015 and have been using it since then. I would not recommend the surgery.

Re: Surgery for muscles that have collapsed
UPPP has fallen out of favor because it is not very effective in most cases. It also leaves permanent bad side effects. CPAP is the gold standard. Stick around here and learn how to use CPAP properly. Your dry mouth could be caused by an improper CPAP circuit. People here can help if you share more information.deepjyoti wrote: ↑Thu Aug 19, 2021 12:08 amI am having trouble with my sleep. Re: Surgery for muscles that have collapsed
For anyone interested in the topic, here's a discussion from a trusted web source (U of Michigan medical school):

To me, the biggest takeaway is that even if the surgery helps, you may still need PAP to address apnea properly. Second biggest takeaway: you shouldn't really consider the surgery until you've given PAP a real try.

Re: Surgery for muscles that have collapsed
And ten days is not even close to a fair try.
It took me months before I was truly comfortable sleeping with cpap.
It did not help that I was initially stuck with a non-auto machine
and over titrated by about 3 cm.
My biggest struggle was with masks.
My greedy first DME pushed the WORST masks on me.
I used cpap.com to find better masks than the G-D DME would let me see.

Re: Surgery for muscles that have collapsed
When I had my sleep test (1996) the only mask they had for me to try was a nasal mask. At that time, I was a mouth breather due to the deviated septum. My job at that time required a lot of travel and the CPAP machines were not the small compact machines we have today. I was already carrying a nebulizer machine due to my asthma, and did not want to pack something else around with me on the airplanes.
