How do my machine readings look?

Post by tbeb » Fri Jan 01, 2021 10:07 am

My sleep test AHI was 28.5. My machine is a Dreamstation Auto with humidifier. Hose is heated. Last night was my 51st night using cpap. Here are my machine readings, shown as
AHI/90% pressure, for the last 14 nights: 4.5/11.0, 2.4/11.0, 3.8/10.0, 3.0/9.0, 4.0/10.5, 3.0/10.5, 4.5/9.0, 2.4/8.0, 4.7/9.0, 3.4/10.5, 2.2/10.0, 2.7/11.5, 3.6/11.5, and 4.8/11.0.
My sleep coach is very polite but honestly not very helpful so that's why I'm asking how my readings look. Thanks.

Hello, tbeb. Your AHI is certainly better than it was, but I wonder whether it could be better still. As a very general rule of thumb, an AHI between 1 and 2 is good and under 1 is excellent. Sleep technicians tend to think anything under 5 is fine.

To recommend possible tweaks to your settings, people would need to see the data displayed via the Oscar software (see below). If you have a laptop or desktop, plus an SD card in your machine and an SD card reader (in your computer or as a plug-in), you are ready to go. We'd be happy to help if you have any problems getting Oscar to work.
Oscar software is available at https://www.sleepfiles.com/OSCAR/

tbeb, to follow up on what miss e is saying, the ahi is a combination of individual "events". these events can be different for each of us. and their combination can be different. there are "obstructive" events. there are "hypopnea" events. there are "central" events. and so and and so forth.

what the oscar software can tell us is which events make up your particular ahi. once that is seen, the experts can give you tips on how to reduce the events and therefor improve your total ahi.

if you can, please post a chart here, in this thread, so folk can see what is going on.

good luck!

It all depends on what that AHI is composed of (the 3 event categories that make up the AHI) and how you feel during the day and how you are sleeping.

Also depends on when those events got flagged...like maybe at the beginning and ending of the sleep session and maybe you were awake and if that's the case they simply don't count.

So can't really tell much about numbers only.

Should I post a chart of Usage Statistics or Overview or Daily?

daily please. pugsy tells us this-

viewtopic/t172378/Sticky--Newbies-PLEAS ... STING.html

click on the above link, then scroll down to #4, which gets to the heart of the matter.

basically, you want your charts to be organized like this-

"Suggested Support Order for your charts
Event Flags
Flow Rate
Pressure
Leak Rate
Flow Limit (Only for Resmed machines, not on Respironics)"

as miss e says, any problems with this, please don't hesitate to ask.

OH! and you post 3 or more charts(that is, a chart for each of three nights) or more. the experts are looking for trends, not just one crappy night's sleep.

good luck!

Does my 1-day chart look right? The leak rate chart isn't visible and I don't know why. If it looks alright then I'll post a chart for a few more days.

I fall asleep in 5 minutes or less. Wife wakes me once pretty much every night when she hears the mask leaking (and I don't). I've experienced vertigo every night when I move around in bed. This definitely began with cpap! Long story short, doctor hastily put me on bp medicine. After 2 weeks I got off that and I'm on 2nd day of using a prescription motion sickness type pill. I sleep long enough but don't feel rested when I wake up. Adjusting to cpap and dealing with the vertigo has been exhausting. If motion sickness pill stops the room from spinning then I think I'll be okay.

Look up side effects of that pill - see if anything might interfere with sleep (and don't count on your MD to have done that).

Don't really need to see the leak graph at this time. You aren't having any large leaks and we know that because there aren't any large leaks flagged up on the Events graph. The LL line...that's large leak.

Are you waking often during the night?

Is the vertigo you are experiencing during the night lasting throughout the day as well?

The bulk of what you see flagged on the Events graph (except the CA/central stuff) points to the airway trying to collapse a bit still yet but I hesitate to offer the usual fix of "more minimum pressure" because of the vertigo. If the vertigo is related to pressure then more pressure might make the vertigo worse. If the vertigo is indeed for sure related to cpap...you probably need to see an ENT doctor and have the eustachian tubes evaluated. The tubes shouldn't be allowing the pressure into the inner ear but I have heard that sometimes it happens.

Thanks for the info. I'm not waking often during the night. During the day more like lightheadedness than vertigo. Will post a few more charts tomorrow.

Make sure the vertigo is not a reflection of dehydration. I get that if I am just slightly dehydrated. I keep a large, handled mug by my side to remember to drink a swallow or 2 often.

Thanks. I don't think it's due to dehydration but I did start drinking more water a couple weeks ago.
