My mouth is dry in the morning, what could it be?

Post by dudley_doright » Wed Mar 07, 2007 5:30 am

I sometimes awaken in the middle of the night because my mouth is dry.
Am I breathing thru my mouth? I am using a Swift right now and just waiting for the OptiLife.
Need advise on what to do. Should I switch to Activa FF mask?

You are probably mouth breathing.

You could try a FF mask, chin strap, or taping. Chin straps work for very few but I personally think it's worth a try since they're not expensive.

I agree with Blarg.

Tape is best. I tape in combination with a 3 inch ace bandage from the crown of my head to under my chin. This combination I find solves the problem for me.

Yep ... indications are that you are mouth breathing ... actually, training yourself not to mouth breathe is best if you can do it. Otherwise, taping or gluing you mouth shut is the only way short of using a full face mask.

Odds are you are mouth breathing.

IMAO, here is a good progression when you start cpap:

1. Nasal pillows
2. Nasal pillows with chin strap
3. Nasal pillows with mouth taped shut
4. Full face mask (Hybrid in my case)

In step 1, you need to figure out as quickly as possible whether you can keep your mouth shut well enough to get a good therapy (I couldn't).

In step 2, you need to figure out if the chin strap will stop mouth leaks and if you can tolerate the dang uncomfortable strap (I failed both).

In step 3, you need to check whether your cheeks puff out and awaken you over and over (mine did).

Step 4, resign yourself to a ff mask and try several different models to find one that works for you.

Keep coming back here for advice; you will get a lot of advice here, some of it contradictory. Most people can wade through it and eventually get something that works for their case.

I definitely mouth breathing. I am currently using Swift and have ordered OptiLife. I know the OL has chin strap but it is not really to shut the mouth.
Anyone use OL? Can you tell me if your mouth is dry in the morning?
How about Activa? Is that a FFM? Any comment on this device?

I use Opti and I am not a mouth breather. I do wake up sometimes with air leaking thru my lips. I don't have a complete dry mouth, just where air had been moving thru my mouth. I think this is called lip puffing and I did this with 3 other masks as well.
Rooster's Four Step Program above is great advice for mouth breathers.

Dry Mouth

All the stages rooster mentioned, I went through, exactly.

Don't know about the OL or Activa, but the new Hybrid is working well so far, and it's been only one night. Hope it's the one.

I really liked the optilife mask. I did have to tape my mouth shut. I stopped using the mask when I started getting blisters on my nares. I think as I slept I pushed the wings up and made the pillows rub on the nares too much. Which ever side I slept on at night, had a blister on that nare in the am. The blisters are almost gone now so I will try this mask again and see what happens.

I made a strap that attaches together with velcro that I put around my mouth. It is made of an old sweat band and works to keep my cheeks from puffing.

Call this step 3.5 and maybe you can get results there.

I found water based 'secaris' or chap stick stopped the nares sores. Vaseline also works but I have read here that it is not good for the fabric of the mask.

I have tried chin straps, taping the mouth, FF masks as well as the Hybrid.

Chin strap just didn't work.

I felt claustrophobic taping the mouth.

FF masks sprung leaks, some into my eyes and were really uncomfortable.

Hybrid works the best for me. I love the mask now that I got the new headgear. Also, I don't have such a bad dry mouth with the Hybrid as compared to the FF masks.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

And NO, the Activa is not a full face mask. Resmed is the manufacturer of the Activa nasal interface. It also makes the UMFF, which is a full face mask.
