Mouth-breathing

Post by golfgame » Wed Apr 01, 2020 12:50 pm

:?: I am a terrible mouth breather! I have tried painters tape, surgical paper tape and most recently Somnifix. The surgical paper worked fine with two strips but after several days it was not treating the skin well. The blue painter's tape was so, so. I am presently using Somnifix. I don't like the price of that. I also find that during the night I tend to build up some moisture that causes that at times to leak at the corner of my mouth. I am wondering if the temp or humidity needs adjusting? The current settings are
Vauto
Pressures 13/9
Climate - Auto
Temp 80*
I use a chin strap as well which I was hoping that the taping would suffice. :?:

you can, if you like, try this-

i've been using jay's method, slightly hacked, for years and it's helped tremendously.

i also use a firm foam cervical collar.

i attribute both of these things with helping me lower my overall ahi.

good luck!
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

Hello, golfgame. This seems to call for some experimentation. Here are a few thoughts:

* You could try Micropore silicone tape (S surgical tape), which some people like. (Note: this is not their paper tape.)

* You could try reducing your hose temperature and/or setting your humidifier to a fixed level, finding something that is still comfortable for you but perhaps generates less moisture. (I'm a little skeptical whether this will make a difference to the moisture that is getting through your lips, but who know?)

* You could try rolling your lips inward a bit more than you do now before you put the Somnifix or other tape in place. Pay special attention to the corners of your mouth.

I use the generic brand Equate athletic tape from Walmart. It costs less than 2 bucks and lasts about 3 weeks. 1 piece does not always hold through the night, I use 2 and it works great.

Hi why are you using mouth tape with a full face mask? I thought a full face mask does not require mouth taping?

I am not using and have never had a full facemask, I am using the Bleepsleep system.

While I can't be sure, I think warp3456 was addressing his comment to another poster who does show a full face mask in his equipment profile.
This happens a lot when people don't directly tell us who they are talking to. Maybe they don't know how to do the quote thing so we know who someone is talking to.

Does this negate the use of taping the mouth? That would be great if so?

yes, please. i want to know even if it doesn't work for you. so far, it seems to work for more people than it doesn't.

good luck!

oh and don't forget the firm foam cervical collar. either online or at your local drugstore.

So far the Scunis have not worked for me. Do you use them doubled up?

oh, sorry it didn't work "out of the box". yeah, i've had to modify jay's method a bit. somewhere around here, i have a picture of me in the rig.

hold on, i have a thought. pardon me, this may seem strange to you-

hey, dog slobber? do you have the original unaltered pic of me in my rig? need to show someone what the setup looks like and i can't seem to find it.
i use two scunicis. one goes up over the back of my head as jay describes. the other is slightly smaller and goes around the back of my neck. i then use two thin elastic bands(also scunci brand) over the hairbands, one so that it fits across my top lip, the other around my bottom. both of these circle the back of my neck.

once dog slobber sees the shout out i gave to him, maybe he'll post the pic and you'l get a better idea.

thank you very much! i knew i could rely on your mad skills.

to the op: i see that i'm only using one elastic band in the earlier version. i later found that i needed to add a second band to keep my big yap closed!
