I start adjusting the mask as it ramps up. DME guy said to do it that way. Should have known that wasn’t correct. I will try adjusting at full pressure tonight and see how it goes. I was only offered two FF masks to even try (both ResMed) which were not the prescribed ones.

I am a huge mouth breather and always have been so I’m not sure about a nasal mask. I have been looking at the Amara full view face mask but not sure it will work with my crazy pressure at this point. It says it’s only rated to 20.

I have lost 10 pounds since my in clinic study was done so hopefully as I keep losing weight that will help lower my pressure.

Thank you all again.
I have always been a mouth breather, imagine my surprise when trying a nasal mask it worked. Apparently I don't breath through my mouth when I'm asleep. Lol. For me it is much easier to get a nasal mask to seal and stay sealed at my high pressure. I am on the vauto bilevel because my pressure needs can go over 20.

Has anyone ever heard of anyone feeling nauseous every morning after therapy? I feel okay when I first wake up but within an hour my stomach is upset and I feel like I need to throw up, sometimes I actually do depending on if I eat anything or I end up with dry heaves. I was just curious if anyone else has had that problem. I don't "think" I'm swallowing air other than the night I tried full pressure at the beginning.

I'm still not sure about a nasal only mask. I know for a fact I can't handle anything in my nose. That nasal cannula I had for the at-home study drove me bananas.

I might try that F&P Simplus FF mask tonight with the lower pressure to help my nose, if I can get it to seal better.

Thank you all again for all the help. I find it ridiculous that the medical community doesn't give newbies more support. I basically had the study, then got the machine, and was on my own. I'm so thankful I found this forum!

The nauseous feeling could be aerophagia or air being forced into your stomach. Do you feel bloated/belch

I don’t really feel bloated and haven’t belched anymore than normal. lol

@pugsy - not sure I completely understand all settings yet. I have been doing a lot of reading but it takes awhile to sink into my brain. lol

I will keep reading as much as possible. I have always believed that the more you know the better off you will be.

EPAP....exhale pressure

IPAP....inhale pressure

PS...pressure support...the difference between inhale and exhale

You don't have to have the need to belch a lot or even fart a lot to have problems with air in the belly/gut/stomach.
The air itself can just upset the stomach and cause the nausea. Just a minor upsetting of the stomach juices can lead to the nausea sometimes.

Good news is that unless last night was a total fluke I think you can get by with less pressure and not compromise the therapy itself and less pressure means less chance of a visit from the aerophagia monster.
We don't want to trade one problem for another one that ends up making you sick during the day.

If something isn't clear to you.....just ask because I flunked mind reading 101 in college.

Night two of the lower settings. I am beginning to wonder why they prescribed such a high pressure? Am I missing something? Evidently, I had at least a couple of "large" mask leaks, but they didn't wake me up. For some reason though, I can't get past four to five hours of sleeping before waking up. I am up an hour or so and then feel like I did before therapy, where I just "had" to go back to sleep for awhile.

That was my very first thought when I saw your first results at the lower settings...well actually the thought was "where the hell did they come up with 20/24....their butts"

More proof that titration sleep studies done in a lab don't always get it right.

I think you could probably get by with even less minimum EPAP than the 12. The machine isn't wanting to increase things much as it is now.

That last large leak might have been a factor in the wake up...and then not be able to go back to sleep easily which can happen but should improve with time and experience. Happens to me occasionally even now.

Try to be patient...this whole adjustment thing isn't easy for most people. Heck it took me about 3 months for my brain to quite waking me up for no reason at all except to alert me that this "thing" was still on my face and did I really care.

Should I be concerned with the snore graph from OSCAR? There are a couple times during the night that it has been spiking. Do I need to adjust my pressure to deal with this? Thanks!

Given your problems with aerophagia I am not so sure I would mess with the pressure in any effort to target those snores more directly.
Can you plug in your pressure graph next to the snore graph to see what the machine was trying to do when the snores got flagged?

Were you by chance on your back when those got recorded?

Here is the pressure and snore graph. I'm not sure about being on my back at that time. I could have been.

The machine didn't really respond to the increase in snores. I would assume that nothing else was going on that might trigger more pressure. It could go higher but it didn't. If I was sleeping good and feeling good then I would just ignore those snores especially with a history of aerophagia issues. To deal with those snores you would have to be using a much higher pressure...those snores happened and your pressure was up nearing 17 cm IPAP as it was.

Today is the first day in over a week that I haven't felt nauseated. Either I am finally getting used to the pressure or it was because my mask was so tight I wasn't getting much benefit from the therapy. LOL Either way, sore face and all, I will take it.

As always, Pugsy, thanks for the info!

EDIT: Mask Issues

Post by Attagirl70 » Tue Dec 24, 2019 6:33 am

Good morning,

I am trying another mask, the Dreamwear Full Face Mask, size large. DME guy said he didn't think a medium would work for me. I REALLY love the fact that it does not sit on the bridge of my nose!

I have had this mask for a few nights now and I am having some problems with it. First, my nares are SO sore each morning when I wake up, I have tried adjusting the mask to loosen it as much as possible without it blowing the seal, so I'm wondering if maybe it's just because it's something new and will take time to go away?

#2: I have been waking up with the bottom of the mask in my mouth even though it's still tucked under my nose. I have been trying a chin strap but either I am not using it correctly or it's simply not helping this issue. Any ideas how to help this?

#3: This mask seems to dry my mouth out more than any other mask I've tried. I have my humidity level set at 5. I really don't want to bump it up because then I feel like I'm drowning the next day.

#4: The top part of the headgear is very floppy on my head (the part with the hose connection). I have adjusted the straps on this as well with no luck. Could it be too big?

#5: If I even slightly move the corners of my mouth, the mask seal breaks. I have ordered a wide medium size cushion, which is supposed to be here Friday, so that may make a difference.

I am hoping to make this mask work because it's fantastic for sleeping on my side without losing the benefit of the therapy.

As always, any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you and Merry Christmas!!

Did I see your headgear/mask was large? I’m pretty chunky and have a fair amount of facial fat but a small nose and mouth. I have the small dreamwear frame and small full face mask. At first I thought it was too small but I had it too tight. I loosened it and I’ve been doing better. I hurt my face in the beginning. But I’ve had no leaks. Could it be too big? I’ve only had my APAP for 6 nights but it sounds big to me.
