Yearly maintenance for CPAP

Post by K5MOW » Sat Sep 28, 2019 8:41 am

Good morning everyone

I’m just wondering if anyone sends their machine out to have it calibrated and cleaned and tuned up yearly. I came across a company That Repair’s CPAP that is factory authorized. They recommend even if your CPAP or BiPAP auto Pap or whatever is working fine it should be sent in for maintenance yearly. Since I have more than one machine I was thinking about sending by air sense 10 in for maintenance. It has never been done in five years. What do you all think of this. They also calibrate it to make sure the proper pressure is coming out.

In my opinion a "check-up service" is not necessary.

Yes..send it to them so they can dust it and polish it. NOTHING needs calibration..these machines are designed to run 8 hours a night, 365 days a year for 5+ years without service. If your unit is over 5 years old, you should consider a new machine, using the old one for travel and back up. You can check the pressure accuracy with a home made manometer or by going in to a local DME. Many will check for free....it takes seconds.

Do it yourself. Unless there's something that's really out of whack, there's no maintenance to be done to an XPAP machine.

I have used the "homemade" (bucket of water, ruler and Sharpie) method and I also have the Tiara gauge manometer.

I wonder how often a unit does not get returned.
It would be just my luck . . .

Or I would get some one else's machine that was ready to die completely. I won't be sending mine any where unless it is completely dead.

I run the Resmed AirSense10 and I wash my hose, mask weekly. I also wipe down my nasal pillows (inside and out) every day after use with anti-bacterial wipes. Change my filter every month as well...and wash out my water tank weekly.

HOWEVER, how do you clean INSIDE the machine? I"ve had mine about 16 months now and realize that we we yank off everything that we can to clean EXCEPT, the actual housing itself?

What's the verdict on cleaning the unit? Nothing?

Curious.

I assume you are talking about the part of the machine that contains the blower and fans and electronics???

There are no provisions for us to clean those areas. We can't easily get to them so I would assume we aren't supposed to go messing around in there....nor do we need to.

Even in situations where the same machine is used by different people no one opens up the machine to clean it.
Read the manual...the part about cleaning....or reprocessing the equipment

Do NOT disassemble your machine!!! There is NOTHING in there to clean. The air path from the intake to the outlet is a sealed unit. If anything should possibly get past the intake filter(s), it would be dropped into the HH tank and stay there.
Any bacteria or viruses (pathogens) are too large to be carried out of the humidifier by water vapor molecules.

$11.97 U-tube manometer at Amazon. Similar devices are on ebay.

Normally used to determine if your home fresh air (radon removal) system is working.

You'll have to stick on a centimeter scale:

https://www.amazon.com/RadonAway-50017- ... A2RM9NJ9N6

If the fluid level oscillates (bounces up and down) with changes of pressure, use a piece of coat hanger to SLOWLY push a small (1/4 x 1/4 x 1/4 inch) piece of soft open cell foam down, near the bottom of the U to dampen the oscillation.

Don't use rigid foam. Don't use too much soft foam or it'll become over-damped (too sluggish). Then you'll have a great time fishing it out. A tiny piece of cloth or a piece of cotton ball may work, but I haven't tried either. A cotton ball may unravel.
