Is it bad to leave CPAP machine electric cable plugged?

Post by mdanaci » Thu Aug 22, 2019 5:23 am

Hello, today I bought my first CPAP device. It is F&P Icon+.
There is no main power switch device. There is only one button. Seller told me to unplug device if device not in use. Otherwise, device may get heated.
I don't want to unplug it every morning and plug it every night. Will my device gets damage if I leave it plugged?

Leave it plugged in. It will be fine.

You're using it how it's supposed to be used.

Leaving it plugged in was how it was designed to be used.
Yes..it will stay a bit warm but it shouldn't be hot to touch.

You need to leave it plugged in so that your provider can get compliance data. Even if you're past the compliance period, you might need to be complaint to receive supplies.

My current machine has been continually plugged in for almost 5 years......unplugged maybe 5-6 times.

If you're really worried about it, plug it into a surge arrester with an on/off switch on it. That way, you can switch it off instead of unplugging it every morning.

I can only think of 2 reasons to unplug the machine--traveling, and an electrical storm.
I usually sleep through electrical storms, though. :?

You can leave it plugged in it will use a little more power, but if you are like the cheaper people here you can expect to get a discount and let your Neighbors to pay the diffderence or more on their electric bills. Jim California Dreamers!

I think sellers don't know how to use these devices in my country.

Sometimes electricity goes off for about 5 minutes where i live and I worry about unregulated voltage. Yesterday i bought cheapest UPS device and disassembled it's buzzer. (No annoying beeps when electricity goes off) On my second night with cpap, it worked. 😀

Using a power strip . . .
Since repeated on/off cycles kill incandescent bulbs, doesn't the same apply to transformers?
Genius input required.
My machine is plugged into a power strip--but so is everything else!
I am not thrilled with the idea of resetting the alarm clock every night, I pass.

To a much much much much less extent.

The problem with Incandescent bulbs is that there's an *extreme* temperate change between off and on, with them... and over time, the tungsten wire inside ends up burning off tiny bits. (if you look closely at the filament in an old bulb, it's not as smooth and perfect shaped as a new one). and eventually, when the surge of electricity hits when you turn on the bulb, it is just too much for a weaked spot, and *pop* (which is why incandescents burn out most often when first turned on).

Good power supplies have things like inrush current limiters so they start more gently, plus they don't heat up nearly as much. What ofen kills power supplies over time is the capacitors, which just die of old age, not so much use.

They do make Power Strips that have switch for each power outlet, I have two, very handy, if I see them with a good price I'll buy more. I am also thinking about those wifi controlled switches, but only having two wire house wires keep me away.

I have lost my Kill a Watt, I think my T.V.'s are using a lot of power when turned off, plugging them in is like arc welding. Jim
I am also Wall Wart Poor must have 20 of them.

That's just the capacitors charging up.
